CULLMAN, Ala. – Cross Creek Golf Course hosted the 4th annual John E. Hunt Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday and 30 teams consisting of more than 100 players entered to participate. Proceeds from the event go toward funding the Hunt Family Foundation’s scholarship programs as well as supporting other community events and athletes.
The tournament was first held in 2021 after longtime Cullman Parks and Recreation Director John Hunt passed away in March 2020. The Hunt Family Foundation runs the event each year and the proceeds from the tournament go toward funding scholarships to Auburn University and Wallace State Community College for Cullman County Students. John’s wife, Elizabeth Hunt was happy to report another great turnout for this year’s tournament and thanked the community for its continued support of their family’s cause.
“We are so overwhelmed, blessed and grateful. This has exceeded all of our goals. We didn’t have any expectations and didn’t know where it would lead but it has continued to grow and people still want to come out,” Hunt said. “I think it just goes back to how John touched the community and how he left his fingerprints on the things he was able to assist with bringing to the Cullman community. That’s what we want to do. We want to keep that going on his behalf and the community’s as well. I also want to thank Cullman Parks & Rec and all of our sponsors for helping make this possible.”
Over the past year the Hunt Family Foundation has been able to contribute to several causes in the community including a couple of parks & rec projects. The foundation is also continuing to fund scholarships for local students at Wallace State and Auburn University.
“We have been able to donate to the Field of Miracles and help with the refurbishing of that. We were also able to make a donation to the new splash pad at Heritage Park and we had several opportunities throughout the year to buy sports equipment and help pay registration fees for some kids to play their chosen sport with parks & rec,” Hunt said. “This year we will focus a lot on paying registration fees in the spring. We have endowed the scholarship at Auburn and then we continue to give to Wallace State for Cullman County students as well. John’s passion was to make sure that families had the opportunity for their kids to play sports and he considered it his mission to work in that field. He wanted to help remove obstacles for them to play, and we are very touched that people continue to come out and support those causes.”
