CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman High School (CHS) Head Basketball Coach Stu Stuedeman, along with his team of CHS Varsity Basketball players hosted the inaugural Stu’s Crew Basketball Camp in partnership with the Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism (CPRST) Therapeutic Recreation Program (TRP) on Saturday, Aug. 24, at CHS Bearcat Arena.
The partnership with TRP meant that children and individuals of differing abilities could attend a sports camp dedicated and designed to make the sport accessible for all physical and mental abilities.
“It was a special day full of smiles and fun had by both participants and volunteers,” shared Stuedeman. “Ever since I first came to Cullman four years ago it’s been a dream of mine to host a camp for individuals with special needs.”
Differently abled individuals from the community and clients of the TRP were invited to learn the game on their level, with the help of local volunteers and businesses. In addition to the CHS Varsity Basketball players volunteering at the camp, Stuedeman’s wife, Tricia Stuedeman, and his group of CHS Assistant Coaches, Jason Parrish, Scott Broad, Josh Marshall and Arden Crane, donated their time and skills to the camp and its participants.
Dribbles, relays, shots and laughs were practiced all morning, while skills and lessons were learned by both students and teachers. After the camp, Apel Steel provided each player lunch with a pizza party, and Legend Brand co-sponsored a free shirt for each attendee, compounding the air of team camaraderie.
“With the amount of support our community gives us during the season, it’s always great to be able to give back,” Said Parrish. “I know I personally had a great time with our campers and think our guys did, too.”
