CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County Parks and Recreation is making plans and preparing for the introduction of fall with one of its larger festivals: the 28th Annual Sweet Tater Festival, which will kick off on Sunday, Sept. 1, and run until Monday, Sept. 2, at Smith Lake Park.
“We’re really excited about hosting the 28th annual Sweet Tater Festival. It will be a fun-filled Sunday and Monday with lots of vendors and, of course, sweet taters,” shared Cullman County Parks and Recreation Director Kenneth Cornelius. “The fries are a must-have.”
The event will feature live music and entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, resource booths and more.
A big draw of the two-day festival is the Labor Day Car Show. It’s held on the second day of the festival each year and sees participants showing off souped-up and classic cars, other automobiles and bikes. Registration is $15 per vehicle entered, with the potential to walk away with first-place bragging rights and a $1,000 cash prize. A 50/50 drawing will also take place during the car show. Registration for the Sweet Tater Festival Labor Day Car Show will run from 7-11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2.
Cornelius smiled and said, “My favorite thing about the weekend is seeing which of the great cars, trucks and bikes that are brought to the car show wins Best of Show on Monday.”
The Sweet Tater Festival will take place Sunday, Sept. 1, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 2, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission to the festival will set attendees back $5 each. However, the admission cost covers entry for both days of the festival. Smith Lake Park’s amenities will be open and available during the festival, including swimming and miniature golf; camping sites are available for the weekend.
