CULLMAN, Ala. – The main branch of the Cullman County Public Library System (CCPLS) was a zoo – or rather, a farm – on Monday, June 24. Judy Snead and her trove of furry friends from local animal rescue Snead’s Farmhouse Sanctuary entertained local children for storytime as part of the library’s summer reading program. Each Monday and Wednesday throughout the summer, a special guest joins the crew at the library to engage participants with a fun story or hands-on activity.

Snead recited and performed her children’s book, “Snead’s Farmhouse” as the children listened, learning about the inner-workings of a farm while picking up, Snead hoped, an invaluable life lesson: animals deserve respect and to live a comfortable life free from harm and danger. The book follows the farm’s beginnings and the tales of different animals and their lives at Snead’s.

Snead brought along some tiny pigs, a rabbit and a tortoise for the youngsters to touch and learn about after storytime concluded. The gathered children squealed and laughed as they felt the spiny hairs of the small pigs, the hard shapes of the tortoise shell and the soft fur of the angora rabbit.

Attendees who registered at the library entrance are entitled to one free admission to Snead’s Farmhouse Sanctuary. Those passes are available at the branch’s circulation desk until Saturday, June 29, at 1 p.m.

Sneads Farmhouse Sanctuary is located at 820 County Road 1225. The farm is Snead’s private residence and not open to the public. Tours must be booked in advance online at www.sneadsfarmhouse.com/book-a-tour. Tour prices are $15 per entrant and are scheduled Friday through Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.

The next children’s program at the library will be 2B Wild West Ranch show at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26.
