VINEMONT, Ala. – So far, the month of June has been busy for the members of the Vinemont Town Council. Ross Campbell was sworn in to Place 3, Sonya Copeland resigned from Place 5, and the coming months have more in store for the small town.
At its meeting on June 11, he council discussed several upcoming events including the June monthly senior luncheon, Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration, and the return of the Battle of the Heroes at BBQ Fest.
June’s monthly senior luncheon will be held on Monday, June 17, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Vinemont Community Center. There will be a lunch of prepared deli sandwiches, tea and dessert, along with an afternoon full of bingo, prizes and fun.
The town’s annual Fourth of July Celebration will be held June 30, from 6-9 p.m. at the Vinemont Community Center. Mayor Radginal Dodson said he has been in contact with Cullman County Sheriff’s Office about help direct the flow of traffic during the event.
Dodson said, “The captain I’ve been in contact with, most likely, his main thing would be on Park Drive and the flow of traffic onto (U.S. Highway) 31.”
Vinemont’s BBQ Fest will make its return to the Vinemont Sportsplex on Oct. 26, bringing back the Battle of the Heroes- a battle to see which team of emergency responders can grill up the best wings. People’s Choice, the ticketing-based system of choosing the crowd favorite grill master will be coming back, but possibly with a difference. Last year, the first 200 guests were invited to purchase a set of tickets which then bought a grilled wing from each competing booth; guests were also given a voting ticket to drop into the basket of their favorite team.
“We need to do a better job of explaining what to do; I don’t think a lot of people knew what to do,” said Councilman Chris Thompson.
Also on the agenda was a request to approve a bid from Backstage Productions for the BBQ Fest’s audio and stage setup. Thompson voiced support for the use of Baker Productions instead. Town Clerk Kayecea Sasser said the issue with using Baker Productions was that they could not provide a stage for the event, a necessity for the live music planned.
“I’d like to give Charles (Baker) a chance to get us something, and I bet he will,” Thompson said.
The council agreed to table the subject to allow more research.
In other business, the council unanimously approved the purchase of RecDesk software to assist with online event registration, park and recreation sign-ups and facility rentals.
The next council meeting will be Tuesday, July 18, at 6 p.m. at Vinemont Town Hall.
