PREP SOFTBALL: Cullman eliminated from North Regional with 6-3 loss to Buckhorn

FLORENCE, Ala. – After splitting their first 6A North Regional matchups with Hazel Green and Fort Payne Monday, the Cullman Bearcats were back on the field at Coffee O’Neal Park Tuesday morning for an elimination game against Buckhorn. The ‘Cats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Bucks plated six unanswered runs to come from behind and defeat Cullman 6-3, knocking the Bearcats out of the postseason.

Cullman’s bats came out hot and took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Abby Maples led off the inning with a single, Taylor Au followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position and Brooklyn Morton drove them both in to score, putting the Bearcats on top 2-0 after the first. After a scoreless second inning, Cullman added to its lead in the third when Hattie Graham drove in Au with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 game. Buckhorn responded in the top half of the fourth, plating four runs on five hits to take a 4-3 lead into the fifth.

The Bucks tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh to extend their lead to 6-3 and the Bearcats were unable to tie things up in the final frame, bringing Cullman’s season to an end at 23-18-1.

Au and Maples led the Bearcats at the plate with two hits each and Morton (one hit) posted a pair of RBIs. Brie Voss, Kynlei Storey and Reese Hopper each added a hit as well.
