JASPER, Ala. – An inmate at the Walker County Jail died while in custody on Friday, April 19.
At the request of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation into an in-custody death that occurred at the Walker County Jail in Jasper on Friday, April 19.
Siras Jeremain Theus, 47, of Jasper, was arrested by the Jasper Police Department on April 12, 2024, and was being held at the Walker County Jail.
Authorities said it is suspected that Theus suffered a medical emergency at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Friday, April 19, and was pronounced deceased.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Walker County District Attorney’s Office.
Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing.
Walker County was under investigation following the hypothermia death of an inmate last year.
According to a lawsuit from 2023 and USA Today, the inmate had “serious mental and psychiatric needs” and was placed in a concrete drunk tank known as “the freezer” before he later died from hypothermia in a death now ruled a homicide, state records show.
Walker County inmate Anthony Don Mitchell died Jan. 26, 2023, while in the custody of the Walker County Sheriff’s Department after “spending fourteen days incarcerated under horrendous conditions” at the Walker County Jail, according to an amended complaint filed in a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
