HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Cold Springs Eagles traveled to Holly Pond for a spring break matchup Monday afternoon and after falling behind in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to pick up a 4-3 win over their county rivals.
Holly Pond took a lead in the bottom of the first when Boston Gibbs knocked a single into left field to drive in Sawyer Olinger and make it 1-0. After a scoreless second inning, Cold Springs responded in the top of the third when Samuel Turner scored from third on a double steal to tie the game at 1.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but the Broncos were able to escape the jam and keep the score knotted at 1 run apiece. An Eagles error allowed Peyton Queen to score to score in the bottom of the fourth, putting Holly Pond back in front 2-1 but Cold Springs got the run right back in the top of the fifth when Brady Phillips scored on a Broncos error to tie things back up at 2.
Queen laid down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom half of the sixth to bring Kollin Brown home to score and put Holly Pond ahead 3-2 going into the final frame. However, with two outs in the top of the seventh, a single from Josh Winfrey and a double off the bat of Phillips made it a 3-3 game. A few pitches later, an error allowed Phillips to score and give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Rex Harrison drew a walk to get the tying run on base for Holly Pond but Cold Springs collected the final two outs to secure a 4-3 road win.
Cole Bales tossed a complete game on the mound to earn the win for the Eagles. Bales allowed two earned runs on just three hits and struck out four batters. At the plate, Phillips (one RBI) and Winfrey each posted a pair of hits. Lindan Hill (one RBI), Matt Williams and Turner each added hits as well.
Jackson Miller pitched a complete game for Holly Pond on the other side, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out four. Gibbs finished with a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss. Brown finished with a hit and Queen added an RBI.
Both teams will meet again Tuesday afternoon at Cold Springs for a rematch.
Cullman 8 – Lexington 0 (Softball)
Cullman struck first in its opening at-bats against Lexington. Abby Maples led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, and she would come around to score on an RBI single by Kynlei Storey to give the Lady Bearcats the early 1-0 lead. Brie Voss scored on an error in the second to make it 2-0. Cullman broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth, as they batted around and put up five runs. Maples hit an RBI single and later scored on an error to give them a 4-0 lead. Dracen Bates scored on another error, Hattie Graham hit an RBI single, and Voss added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0. The Lady Bearcats ended things in the sixth as Resse Hopper hit an RBI single to help seal the 8-0 win for Cullman.
Maples (two hits), Storey (one hit), Hopper (one hit), Graham (one hit), and Voss (one hit) all finished with an RBI for Cullman, and Taylor Au added an RBI of her own in the win. Brooklyn Morton pitched a complete game four-hit shutout, walked two and struck out four.
Cullman 18 – Eastwood 8 (Softball)
Eastwood jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third, but Cullman cut into the deficit after that. Morton hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 3-2, then Kylie Stracener scored on an error in the fifth to tie the game up at three. Eastwood broke the tie with two runs in their half to take a 5-3 lead, but another error in the top of the sixth allowed Au to score to cut it to 5-4. Eastwood scored three runs in their half to take an 8-4 lead.
The Lady Bearcats completely broke the game wide open in the top of the seventh as they scored 14 runs in the inning. The big hits came from Graham (RBI triple, two-run single), Morton (two-run single), Au (two RBI singles), and Hopper (three-run double) as they quickly turned a four-run deficit into an 18-8 lead for them. Cullman would go on to knock off Eastwood, 18-8, to finish the day 2-0. They have now won seven straight games.
Graham (three hits) and Morton (two hits) each finished with four RBIs for Cullman (15-9). Hopper added three hits and three RBIs. Au ended up with a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Maples collected a hit and an RBI in the win.
Dothan 6 – Good Hope 2 (Softball)
Good Hope’s first game of the day ended in a 5-5 tie against Westminster Christian, and the Lady Raiders faced off against Dothan later on that day. The Lady Wolves jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in its opening at-bats, but Good Hope cut it to 4-1 in their half on an RBI groundout by Campbell Koch. The Lady Raiders made it 4-2 in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Koch, but Dothan added a run in the fourth and one more in the fifth to help seal the 6-2 win for them over Good Hope.
In their game against Westminster Christian, Natalie Miller finished with a three-run home run, Kynzlee Garmon added a pair of hits, while Haley Lay, Molly Benefield, and Addyson Burgess each added a hit in the contest. Against Dothan, Koch collected a hit and two RBIs for Good Hope, while Lizzy Steed, Molly Johnson, and Benefield each finished with a hit in the loss.
Good Hope 7 – Southeastern 2 (Softball)
Good Hope quickly got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. Steed reached on an infield single to lead off the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Koch to tie the game up at one. Later that inning, back-to-back RBI singles by Benefield and Lay gave the Lady Raiders a 3-1 lead. They added to their lead in the second. Steed scored on an error, Carley Adams hit an RBI single, and Benefield added a two-run double to increase their lead to 7-1. Good Hope would go on to defeat the Lady Mustangs, 7-2.
Benefield led the way for Good Hope (7-4-1) with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Adams and Lay each added a hit and an RBI, while Koch collected an RBI of her own in the win. Benefield and Burgess gave up just three hits and one unearned run combined, walked three, and struck out four for the Lady Raiders.
Enterprise 7 – West Point 3 (Softball)
West Point took on Gulf Shores in its first game of the day, and it ended in a scoreless tie. The Lady Warriors took on Enterprise in their next game, and the Lady Wildcats got out to an early 4-0 lead. West Point made it 4-1 in the top of the second on an RBI single by Liberty Shadix, and later made it 6-3 in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Macie Brown. Enterprise made it 7-3 in the bottom of the third, and the Lady Warriors ended up falling to the Lady Wildcats, 7-3.
Brown finished with the two-run home run for West Point. Shadix added a hit and an RBI single. Ella Minck ended up with a pair of hits, while Sidney Burks and Katie Beth Yovino each collected a hit in the loss.
West Point 6 – John Carroll 2 (Softball)
West Point got out to the early lead to start out the game as an RBI single by Brinlee Phillips gave them a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by John Carroll in the bottom of the second tie the game up at one. The Lady Warriors broke the tie in the top of the third. Brown hit an RBI double, and Burks followed that up with a two-run single to give them a 4-1 lead. West Point added to their lead in the top of the fourth. An RBI single by Minck brought home Macayla Wilkins, and Minck later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1. The Lady Cavaliers cut it to 6-2 in their half on an RBI single, but they didn’t get any closer after that as West Point ended up defeating John Carroll, 6-2.
Burks finished with a hit and two RBIs for West Point (10-7-1). Minck (two hits), Phillips (one hit), and Brown (one hit) each added an RBI in the win. Kara Jones and Catie Lee gave up just five hits combined and two earned runs and struck out three.
John Carroll 12 – Fairview 7 (Baseball)
John Carroll jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in its opening at-bats, but Fairview got the lead in the top of the fourth. Lucas West hit an RBI single, Nicolas Gregory added a two-run single, and Conner Scott and Colton Jennings each added an RBI single of their own to help give the Aggies a 7-2 lead. The Cavaliers, though, quickly countered in their half as they put up six runs to get the lead right back at 8-7. John Carroll added three more runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth as they ended up taking the game over Fairview 12-7.
Gregory finished with a hit and two RBIs for Fairview. Scott (two hits), Jennings (two hits), and West each added an RBI in the loss.
McAdory 11 – Fairview 2 (Baseball)
After a scoreless first inning, Fairview put up a pair of runs in the top of the second. Caden Barrett hit a two-out RBI single, and Carson Jones later stole home to give them a 2-0 lead. McAdory put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead and completely broke the game wide open in the fifth, scoring eight runs to take an 11-2 lead. The Aggies couldn’t overcome the deficit and ended up dropping the game to the Yellow Jackets 11-2.
Barrett finished with a hit and an RBI for Fairview (16-5), while Gregory, Barett York and Bryceson Turner each added a hit in the loss.
Decatur 5 – Good Hope 3 (Baseball)
Decatur got on the scoreboard in their home half of the first to take the early 1-0 lead. Good Hope grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Brady Stripling, but the Red Raiders tied the game up at two in their half on an RBI groundout. Decatur added two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Caden Drake scored on an error in the top of the sixth to cut it to 5-3, but the Raiders didn’t cut anymore into the deficit after that as they ended up falling to the Red Raiders 5-3.
Stripling finished with a hit and two RBIs for Good Hope (9-8), while Caden Drake, Colten Whatley, and Brylon Bates each added a hit in the loss.
Vinemont 15 – Athens Bible 6 (Baseball) (Game One)
Athens Bible got out to a 6-3 lead in the top of the third inning in the first game against Vinemont. The Eagles, though, countered in a big way in their half. They sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 times. The big hits came from Kayden Henderson (RBI single), Jaxon Holcomb (two-run single), and Josh Rhodes (RBI single), as Vinemont ended up taking a 14-6 lead. The Eagles added another run in the fourth to take a 15-6 lead, and they ended up getting the win over Athens Bible 15-6.
Holcomb led the way for Vinemont with a pair of hits and two RBIs for Vinemont. Henderson added a pair of hits and an RBI. Michael Foust, Jake Hale, and Rhodes each finished with a hit and an RBI, while Rush Sandlin and Jordan Eller each collected an RBI in the win.
Vinemont 18 – Athens Bible 7 (Game Two)
Both teams almost matched each other run for run in the first two innings of the second game as Athens Bible took a 6-5 lead into the third inning. Just like in the first game, Vinemont’s offense exploded in the bottom of the third, putting up 13 runs and got big hits from Foust (two-run single) and Hale (RBI single and two-run single) to take an 18-6 lead. The Eagles would go on to finish off their sweep of Athens Bible, 18-7. Their winning streak is at eight straight games right now.
Hale led the way for Vinemont (17-3) with two hits and three RBIs. Foust added three hits and two RBIs. Henderson (two hits), Sandlin (one hit) and Hayden Robinson (one hit) each finished with an RBI, while Rylan McRae collected an RBI of his own in the win.
West Point 10 – Donoho 1 (Baseball)
West Point didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard against Donoho. Charlie Ashley hit a two-run single in their opening at-bats. Gus McKenney added an RBI single, Titan Thornton and McKenney each scored on an error to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead. They added to their lead in the bottom of the second. J.D. Cochran hit an RBI single, Ashley added a two-run single, and Carter McAfee scored on an error to stretch their lead to 9-0. Cooper Howard added an RBI double in the fourth to give West Point a 10-1 lead, and the Warriors would go on to get the win over the Falcons 10-1.
Ashley ended up with a pair of hits and four RBIs on the day for West Point (8-8). Cochran (two hits), McKenney (two hits), and Howard (one hit) each added an RBI in the win. Cochran, Josh Cherry, and Deacon Stutchman combined to give up just four hits and one unearned run, walked just one and struck out six.
