CULLMAN, Ala. – At its monthly meeting, the Cullman County Board of Education recognized two of its athletic teams. Good Hope High School’s Girls’ Basketball team and Cold Springs High School’s Cross Country team; both of which had impressive seasons.
The GHHS Girls’ Basketball team was up first. The team recently won the first state title in the school’s history.
Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette said, “We have enjoyed watching you and keeping up with you all and we look forward to all you’re going to do – especially you seniors, what you’re going to accomplish after high school. You’ve set the bar really high for next year’s group, so they’re going to have to start working really hard.” Laughing, he added, “No pressure, coaches.”
Head Coach Justin Aby spoke to the board, but directed his words at the girls when he listed their accomplishments.
Aby said, “We have a special group of girls; they’ve put in the time and the effort and everything they’ve needed to do to bring home a state championship for Good Hope.”
CSHS Cross Country Coach Casey Howell talked about the team’s state championship win last fall. The girls won six meets and the boys won four, including county sectionals and the state championship.
“We had 11 girls and guys make All-County,” Howell said. “We had nine people make All-Sectional. We had six people make All-State.”
A majority of the team will be back before the CCBOE in a matter of weeks to receive recognition for another accomplishment.
According to Barnette, “They will be back in a month or so to receive recognition as the Indoor Track State Champions, which is a lot of these same students.”

During the Superintendent’s report, Barnette reminded everyone that spring break will be observed March 25-29, 2024.
