WEST POINT, Ala. — The West Point Lady Warriors returned home Thursday afternoon to take on top-ranked Springville. Thursday is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day and before the game got underway, Copper Floyd, Grant Persall and Benny White each threw out the honorary first pitches.
West Point got on the scoreboard first in their half of the first inning. Macayla Wilkins got hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, then after a sacrifice bunt moved her over to second, a throwing error allowed her to score to give them the early lead. Springville tied the game up at one on a Lady Warrior error in the top of the third.
It quickly turned into a pitcher’s duel after that as the score remained tied at one going into the top of the sixth. The Lady Tigers took a 2-1 lead on an RBI groundout in the sixth. They loaded the bases in the seventh, then a two-run single, an RBI single, and a throwing error saw them stretch their lead to 7-1. West Point didn’t cut into the deficit after that as they ended up falling to Springville 7-1.
Ella Minck and Brinlee Phillips each collected the only hits of the game for West Point (9-6).
Cullman 22 – Pinson Valley 3 (Softball)
Cullman’s bats were red-hot in their game against Pinson Valley. They sent 21 batters to the plate to start out the game and scored 15 runs. The Lady Bearcats added seven more in the top of the second, and they went on to roll past Pinson Valley 22-3.
All but one Cullman player drove in at least one run and all but two had at least two hits. Brooklyn Morton finished with five RBIs in the game, including a three-run home run, for the Lady Bearcats. Samantha Johnson added a hit and three RBIs. Abby Maples ended up with three RBIs. Kynlei Storey (two hits), Taylor Au (two hits), Kylie Stracener (two hits), Dracen Bates (one hit), and Brie Voss all collected two RBIs in the win. The Lady Bearcats improve to 13-9 on the season.
Good Hope 5 – East Lawrence 4 (Softball)
Good Hope struck first in its home half of the first. Lizzy Steed hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Kylee Smith, and scored on an RBI double by Campbell Koch to give them the early lead. East Lawrence put up a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game up at one, but the Lady Raiders broke the tie in their half. Carley Adams hit a leadoff double and later that inning, a one-out single by Natalie Miller brought home Adams to give them a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Eagles scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Molly Benefield retired the side on just eight pitches in the seventh, and Good Hope looked for some late-game heroics in their half. Smith hit a leadoff single and later moved to second on an error. A single by Koch put runners on the corners with nobody out, then Kynzlee Garmon hit a big two-run double to tie the game up at four. One out later, Adams ended the game on the first pitch as her game-winning double gave the Lady Raiders the 5-4 come-from-behind win.
Garmon finished with three hits and two RBIs for Good Hope (6-3). Koch went three-for-three with an RBI. Adams (two hits) and Miller (one hit) each collected an RBI in the win.
Priceville 16 – Hanceville 2 (Softball)
The game was scoreless going into the top of the third. Priceville got a run in the third to take a 1-0 lead, but Hanceville countered in their half. A pair of singles by Karrigan Pipkin and Aaliyah Twitty put runners on first and second with two outs. Kynzlee Farr lined a two-run double to right field to give Hanceville a 2-1 lead. It ended up being all Priceville after that, though as they scored nine runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth. They ended up collecting the win over Hanceville 16-2.
Farr finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs for Hanceville (5-14). Twitty added two hits, and Piper Butts collected a hit in the loss.
Holly Pond 6 – Appalachian 3 (Softball)
Holly Pond didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard in their game against Appalachian. An error and a single had them in business in the Lady Broncos’ half of the first, then with two outs, Molly Neal lined a two-run single to right field to give them a 2-0 lead. Holly Pond made it 3-0 in the second on an RBI double by Ellie Burks. Appalachian cut it to 3-1 in the top of the third on a bases-loaded walk. The Lady Broncos added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth.
They loaded the bases to start out the inning, then Lauryn Hoffman drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1. A two-run single by Maggie Nail gave them a 6-1 lead. The Lady Eagles hit a two-run triple in the top of the fifth to cut it to 6-3, but Alaina Folds and company kept them at arm’s length the rest of the way, and Holly Pond ended up getting a 6-3 win over Appalachian.
Nail finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs for Holly Pond (3-6). Neal added a hit and two RBIs. Burks (one hit) and Hoffman each collected an RBI in the win.
Vinemont 13 – Susan Moore 6 (Softball)
Susan Moore jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead going into the top of the fourth, but Vinemont’s bats came alive that inning. They loaded the bases with one out, then an RBI single by Alaina Sandlin, a bases-loaded walk, a two-run double by Callie Millwood, an RBI groundout by Arleigh Thomason, and a passed ball gave the Lady Eagles a 7-5 lead. The Lady Bulldogs made it 7-6 in their half, but Vinemont was just getting started as their red-hot hitting continued in the fifth.
Brooklyn Knott hit an RBI groundout, Sandlin hit an RBI single, Abby Kuykendall added an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch to stretch their lead to 11-6. Vinemont added two more runs in the seventh to take a 13-6 lead, and they ended up getting the win over Susan Moore, 13-6.
Sandlin led the way for Vinemont (2-7) with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Millwood and Kuykendall each added a hit and two RBIs, while Thomason, Maci Smith and Knott each collected an RBI in the win.
Southeastern 12 – Cold Springs 7 (Baseball)
Each team scored a run in the first and third innings to keep the game tied at two going into the fourth. Southeastern put up a run in their half to take a 3-2 lead, but an RBI single by Lindan Hill tied the game up at three in the top of the fifth for Cold Springs. The Mustangs broke the tie with four runs in their half to take a 7-3 lead. The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs for Brady Phillips, who promptly cleared the bases with a three-run double to cut it to 7-6. Matt Williams added an RBI single to tie the game up at seven going into the bottom of the sixth.
Southeastern put up five runs to break the tie and take a 12-7 lead. The Eagles didn’t have an answer in their final at-bats and ended up dropping the game to the Mustangs 12-7.
Phillips finished with a hit and three RBIs for Cold Springs (3-11). Josh Winfrey and Williams added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Cole Bales and Hill each collected a hit and an RBI in the loss.
Fairview 5 – St. Clair County 1 (Baseball) (Game One)
The game was scoreless going into the second inning. Fairview struck first in their half of the second. Colton Jennings drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an RBI double by Bryceson Turner to give the Aggies the early lead. Later that inning, Caden Barrett and Nicolas Gregory each added RBI singles to make it 3-0. St. Clair County cut it to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but Fairview answered right back in their half. Isaac Elrod hit an RBI groundout, and Turner added an RBI double to give them a 5-1 lead. That was more than enough run support for the duo of Gregory and Conner Scott, who helped lead them to a 5-1 win over the Saints.
Turner finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs for Fairview. Gregory and Barrett each added a hit and an RBI, while Elrod collected an RBI in the win. Gregory and Scott gave up just seven hits combined, allowed just one run, walked three, and struck out five.
Ashville 5 – Good Hope 0 (Baseball) (Game One)
Ashville scored a run to lead off the game, then added two more in the third, and one more in the fourth and seventh as they ended up shutting out Good Hope 5-0.
Carter Naramore, Brady Stripling, and Dakota Overton collected the only hits of the game for the Raiders.
Hanceville 7 – Oneonta 6 (Baseball)
Just like in their last game against Oneonta, Hanceville didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard early. After the Redskins got on the scoreboard in its opening at-bats, the Bulldogs countered in their half. Jake Cornelius reached on an infield single and later scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at one. Back-to-back doubles by Cody Belcher and Gabriel Ognilla gave them a 2-1 lead. Nelson Arteaga followed that up with an RBI single to make it 3-1, then an RBI fielder’s choice by Hunter Weeks and another passed ball gave Hanceville a 5-1 lead.
Oneonta put up five runs of their own in the top of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. The score would remain the same until the bottom of the seventh. Arteaga hit a leadoff double and later scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at six. Hanceville had runners on the corners with one out, then Luke Brown delivered the biggest hit of the game as his game-winning RBI double gave the Bulldogs the 7-6 win over the Redskins.
Arteaga led the way for Hanceville (11-3) with three hits and an RBI. Ognilla and Brown each added a hit and an RBI, while Weeks collected an RBI in the win.
Holly Pond 14 – Brindlee Mountain 4 (Baseball)
Brindlee Mountain jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in its opening at-bats, but Holly Pond took over after that. They put up four runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to take a 7-2 lead. The Broncos added five runs in the fifth and ended things in the sixth as they collected two more runs to get the win over the Lions 14-4.
Bradly Butts led the way for Holly Pond (4-10) with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Peyton Queen added three RBIs of his own, while Carson Ryan and Rex Harrison each ended up with a hit and an RBI in the win.
Vinemont 6 – Danville 1 (Baseball)
Vinemont raced off to an early lead in their game against Danville. A single and an error put runners on the corners in its opening at-bats, then Kayden Henderson scored on a passed ball, and Jake Hale hit an RBI single to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Later that inning, Owen McKinney added an RBI single of his own to make it 3-0. Vinemont stretched their lead to 4-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Rylan McRae.
The Hawks cut it to 4-1 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly of their own, but Vinemont added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. RBI singles by Hale and McKinney gave the Eagles a 6-1 lead, and Vinemont would go on to collect the five-run win over Danville. The Eagles stretch their winning streak to six straight games.
McKinney (three hits) and Hale (two hits) each finished with two RBIs for Vinemont (15-3), while McRae added a hit and an RBI in the win. Rush Sandlin and Josh Rhodes gave up a combined four hits, one unearned run, walked three, and struck out five.
Lawrence County 11 – West Point 8 (Baseball) (Game One)
Lawrence County got out to a quick 8-0 lead against West Point in game one, but the Warriors answered right back in a big way after that. West Point made it 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Cade Welborn. The Warriors rallied to tie the game up at eight in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk, a three-run double by Boston Freeman, an RBI single by J.D. Cochran, and a sacrifice fly by Charlie Ashley. The Red Devils, though, countered in the top of the seventh, scoring three times to take an 11-8 lead. West Point ended up falling just short at the end to Lawrence County, 11-8. Freeman finished with a hit and three RBIs for West Point.
Welborn added a hit and two RBIs, while Cochran and Ashley each collected a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss.
