KIMBERLY – The 3-3 West Point Warriors traveled to Kimberly Friday night to take on region foe, 4-2 Mortimer Jordan. The clock hit zero in the fourth quarter with a final score of 42-20 Blue Devils but the game was much closer for the majority of the match.
The Warriors played well on the offensive end in the first half putting up 20 points on three impressive scoring drives; they weren’t as impressive on the defensive side of the ball as Mortimer Jordan scored on every possession but one in the first half. More specifically they weren’t able to contain Mortimer Jordan running back Spencer Brown, all 6 foot, 235 pounds of him. The senior back rolled his way through the Warrior defense to the tune of 215 yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns.
Mortimer Jordan started the scoring off early when Brown sprinted 60 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage. West Point matched the Blue Devils on the next drive going nearly score for score in the first half.
Jordan was driving near the end of the second quarter when the West Point defense got a much needed stop giving the ball back to their offense with plenty of time left on the clock. The Warriors started driving down, 28-20, when senior running back Cameron Moore fumbled and Mortimer Jordan recovered. Aside from the fumble Moore had a night to remember of his own, totaling 201 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns. On the very next play after the turnover Mortimer Jordan quarterback Douglas Moore connected with receiver Hunter Bartlett for a 63-yard touchdown to make it 35-20 going into the half.
The swift change in momentum took the wind out of the Warriors’ sails as they weren’t able to put points on the board in the second half. The West Point defense stepped up only allowing one touchdown to the Blue Devils in the second half with the game effectively over.
The Warriors fell to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in region play. Mortimer Jordan continued their strong season improving to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in region play. They will travel to Curry to play the Yellow Jackets next week while West Point will return home to face the Good Hope Red Raiders.
