CULLMAN – On Saturday, Oct. 8 the Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation (CCBBF) will host their 4th Annual Bikers Against Cancer event at Cullman Regional Medical Center. Registration and breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. in the Colonel Cullmann Room in Professional Office Building 2.
Mary Dyer, the founder and president of the CCBBF, said that she and her colleagues started the foundation in order to have an independent group in Cullman.
“We are just a support group of women who have had cancer,” she said. “We founded the group to be independent and to support Cullman women. It all started with a bake sale that we had. We set out to raise $1,300, that was our goal. Well, when by the end of it we had raised $1,800 we knew we were doing what we were supposed to be doing, that God was in it, you know.”
The first Bikers Against Cancer charity motorcycle ride was held in 2013, and Dyer has learned much about how to organize the event from the past few years.
“I have learned that it is always harder than you think it is going to be,” she said. “But, we have helped so many people and that is what is important. It does get harder each year to work the event, but the people that it helps makes it worth it, and that is the reason we started this.”
Dyer, a cancer survivor herself, is 77 years old. Everything she and her foundation make goes directly to help those who need it.
“One-hundred percent of everything goes to help our patients,” she said. “There is always someone out there who has had to quit their job so they can make all the appointments and is getting treatment. A lot of us do not realize how bad it is for some people.”
Dyer, as someone who has had to deal with cancer herself and as someone who works with those who have cancer, knows how difficult it can be.
“It is hard to ask for help,” she said. “It is hard to admit that you need help or that you can’t handle it all your own. But that is what we are here for; we are here to help.”
