NEW CANAAN – A standoff between a man and officers from the Arab Police Department and Cullman County Sheriff's Office in the New Canaan community in extreme northeast Cullman County, just outside of Arab, is over, and the suspect is in custody.
"It's over," said a representative from the CCSO. "He was taken to the hospital for evaluation."
The suspect, who allegedly fired a shot, was barricaded inside a camper on County Road 1834 since approximately 3 p.m. today.
Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said, "This was originally called in as a domestic violence call. An Arab police officer arrived on the scene and shortly after heard a shot fired inside the residence. At this time, we cannot confirm if the shot was directed at the officer or a family member inside. We were able to get the family member to a safe location."
Gentry and other law enforcement officers had been speaking to the suspect, attempting to coax him out of the camper.
At this time, the suspect's identity is unknown. No word on what charges the man may face.
This is a developing story.
