PHELAN – Cullman County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) investigators on Thursday arrested Windell Joe Campbell, 59, of Cullman for the murder of Edwin Lee Wood, 43, of Phelan. The crime happened Wednesday night at an apartment on County Road 625 in Phelan.

According to a statement from the CCSO, deputies and investigators responded to a shooting on County Road 625 in the Phelan community Wednesday night at approximately 9:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found Wood deceased due to a gunshot wound.  Deputies took Campbell and another individual into custody at the scene for questioning.

Investigators worked throughout the night and during the day on Thursday questioning witnesses and others and processing the crime scene.

During the process of the investigation, investigators developed probable cause to arrest Campbell for murder.

“This incident is a direct result of how drugs and alcohol can result in the senseless death of an individual’s life,” said Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry.  “I want to thank the deputies and investigators for their quick response and dedication on this case."

Campbell is currently being held in the Cullman County Detention Center without bond. Campbell is also being charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of prescription medicine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
