CULLMAN, Ala.– The parents involved in West Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) are busy making plans for the school’s annual end of the year party for students. This year, however, the West Elementary PTA and East Elementary PTA have decided to join forces and bring the two student bodies together for the first annual Bearcat Glow Bash, hopefully to encourage friendships and allies prior to Cullman City Schools’ plan to merge the two institutions by 2027.
“The Bearcat Glow Bash is a new event to help start merging East and West together more,” said PTA President Jessica Svarney. “We hope this event becomes annual until the new Cullman Intermediate school is finished.”
This year, the bash will be held March 14 at Cullman Middle School’s gymnasium. Students will be able to pre-purchase tickets for $2 each via CheddarUp or through a form that will be sent home with each student.
The bash will feature bumping music courtesy of a live DJ, fun games and student favorite concessions like pizza, candy, popcorn and cold drinks available for purchase, along with bright and colorful glow sticks.
Beginning in early March, West Elementary students will bring home a permission slip to participate in the biggest fundraiser of the year, $1 candy bars with The Worlds Finest Chocolate Bars; students must return the signed slip to bring any boxes of chocolate home on Feb. 8.
“The World’s Finest Chocolate (candy) bar fundraiser is our biggest fundraiser of the year! It’s a great easy way for students to help out their school. Candy bars are $1 per bar and have a buy one get one Big Jack free coupon on every bar. So that’s a $5 value by only spending $1,” Svarney said.
Prizes for the top sellers will be on the line, from AirPods to TVs and ice cream parties for the top selling classroom, and golden tickets will be hidden randomly in boxes. Faculty and staff are also eligible to join the fun and win their own $50 gift card; the faculty or staff member who sells the most candy over two boxes will win store credit. Students who sell five cases of chocolate will attend a special recess, those who sell seven cases get to dunk Principal Dr. Jay Page in the school’s dunking booth and selling 10 cases wins students to opportunity to dunk West Elementary Library Media Specialist Tere Kelly.
Svarney stressed the impact the chocolate fundraiser has on the school explaining, “This fundraiser helps to fund the PTA innovation grant that is awarded in May, (as well as) end of year activities and numerous supplies and items for the school.”
