CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Tree Commission met Tuesday, with Chairman Barry Slatton, members Edgar Veigl, Jan Barnett, Joel Moon and Rachel Dawsey, and recorder Leanne West present.

The commission discussed the seat vacated by longtime member Peggy Harris, who recently retired. Those interested in serving on the commission should be residents of the city of Cullman and submit their name, address and phone number to the Mayor’s Office for consideration.

The commission also announced the winners of the annual Arbor Day Poster Contest:

  • Overall winner: Harper Mitchell (Cullman Christian School)
  • First-place winners: Mitchell and Kristyn Contreras (Sacred Heart School)
  • Second-place winners: Lexi Scheer (Cullman Christian School), Ryan Keough (Sacred Heart School) and Jase Holderfield (St. Paul’s Lutheran School)

West announced the City of Cullman was named a Tree City USA for the 36th time. (See separate, full story).

The commission also discussed plans for this year’s Festival of Trees. At the recommendation of Commission Consultant Phyllis Hain, planning for the festival will begin earlier than last year. The Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center was the host of 2023’s Festival of Trees; however, the commission is searching for a more accessible viewing area for the 2024 festival. Last year, only Cullman City Schools could participate in the festive display; a vote was held to allow the Cullman Public Library to participate in this year’s festival. More information will be obtained before the next meeting.

The next meeting date has been changed to Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Cullman City Hall.
