WEST POINT, Ala. — The West Point Lady Warriors hosted this year’s West Point Softball Tournament Saturday, and they opened up their season with wins over Winston County (4-1), Falkville (9-0) and Fairview (16-0).
West Point 4 – Winston County 1 (Softball)
West Point got on the scoreboard first in their opening at-bats. A walk by Macayla Wilkins and a single by Katie Beth Yovino quickly had runners on second and third. An error on Winston County allowed both Wilkins and Yovino to score to give the Lady Warriors an early 2-0 lead. West Point added to their lead in the top of the third inning. Sidney Burks lined a double to center field with two outs, then on the first pitch, Macie Brown hit a two-run home run over the center field wall to make it a 4-0 lead for the Lady Warriors. The Lady Yellow Jackets stole home in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 4-1, but Kara Jones struck out the next two hitters and induced a ground ball to help seal the 4-1 win for West Point.
Brown finished with a hit and two RBIs in the game, including a two-run home run, for West Point. Yovino added a pair of hits, and Burks collected a hit in the contest. Jones went the distance for the Lady Warriors, giving up just four hits and one earned run and striking out nine.
West Point 9 – Falkville 0 (Softball)
Just like the previous game, West Point got off to a strong start in their second game against Falkville. Wilkins drew a leadoff walk and later on, Brinlee Phillips hit a single to put runners on first and second with one out. A passed ball moved both runners up ninety feet, then Burks hit an RBI groundout, and Phillips stole home to give the Lady Warriors the early 2-0 lead. Jones drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second and later scored on an RBI single by Wilkins to push their lead to 3-0.
Cabri Blackwood reached on an infield single to lead off the third inning, then with one out, Lilly Adamson hit an RBI groundout to give West Point a 4-0 lead. The Lady Warriors were just getting started that inning. After a Wilkins walk, Yovino hit an RBI triple, then Phillips followed that up with an RBI double to make it 6-0. An RBI single by Burks and a two-run single by Jones made it 9-0, and Jones made quick work of Falkville in their half, as West Point picked up a 9-0 win over the Lady Blue Devils.
Burks and Jones each finished with a hit and two RBIs for West Point. Phillips added a pair of hits and an RBI. Wilkins and Yovino each collected a hit and an RBI in the contest, and Adamson added an RBI. Baker put in another strong outing on the mound, pitching four shutout innings and giving up just three hits.
West Point 16 – Fairview 0 (Softball)
West Point batted around in their opening at-bats against Fairview. Phillips hit a pair of RBI singles in the opening inning, Jones collected a two-run single, Wilkins and Yovino each added an RBI single as well, and Wilkins scored on a wild pitch, as the Lady Warriors jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead. West Point quickly ended the game in their next at-bats. Averee Folds and Brown each scored on a Lady Aggie error to make it 11-0. RBI singles by Kortni Baker, Kylie Burks, and Yovino pushed their lead to 14-0. Phillips’ two-run double made it a 16-0 game, and the Lady Warriors would go on to win 16-0 over Fairview.
Phillips finished with three hits and four RBIs for West Point. Yovino and Jones each added two hits and two RBIs. Baker collected two hits and an RBI in the contest, while Wilkins and Burks each added a hit and an RBI. Jones struck out four in her two perfect innings of work for the Lady Warriors.
Fairview 8 – Falkville 0 (Softball)
After two scoreless innings to start out the contest, Fairview got on the scoreboard first in the third inning. A hit by pitch, a Falkville error, and a walk loaded the bases with two outs for Addison Phillips, who hit a two-run double to center field, to give the Lady Aggies a 2-0 lead. Fairview broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning. Jordan Simmons hit a leadoff double, and Emily Benson reached on a dropped third strike. They both scored on a Lady Blue Devil error to make it 4-0, then Ayda Payne added an RBI double and later scored on a double-play ball to widen their lead to 6-0. Josie Earl added an RBI single and later scored on another Falkville error to help seal the 8-0 win for Fairview.
Phillips finished with a hit and two RBIs for Fairview. Payne and Earl each added a hit and an RBI in the contest. Payne went the distance for the Lady Aggies, allowing just five hits and striking out one.
Fairview 6 – Winston County 1 (Softball)
The Lady Aggies struck first in the third inning. An error and an intentional walk put runners on first and second with two outs. Phillips brought home both runners with a two-run triple and scored on a Winston County error during the play to give Fairview a 3-0 lead. Winston County cut it to 3-1 on an RBI double in their half of the third, but the Lady Aggies countered in the top of the fourth. They loaded the bases with two outs, and Payne promptly cleared the bases with a three-run double to give Fairview a 6-1 lead. Phillips retired Winston County in order in their half, and the Lady Aggies ended up collecting a 6-1 win over the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Payne led the way for Fairview with two hits and three RBIs. Phillips added a hit and two RBIs; she gave up just two hits and one run in her four innings of work.
Cold Springs 15 – Clements 10 (Baseball)
Clements got off to a strong start offensively, scoring four runs in the first, and three runs in the second, to take a quick 7-0 lead. The fourth inning saw Cold Springs get on the scoreboard on a Colts error to make it 7-1, then a Clements error in the fifth inning allowed Ethan Nabors to cut it to 7-2. The Eagles loaded the bases to lead off the sixth inning, then Nabors drew a walk to make it 7-3. An RBI single by Lindan Hill and an RBI groundout by Cole Bales made it a 7-5 game, then after an intentional walk loaded the bases once again, Boston Archer hit a two-run single to right field to tie the game up at seven.
Josh Winfrey scored on another Colts error to give Cold Springs an 8-7 lead. Later on that same inning, Archer crossed the plate to make it 9-7, but Clements scored three times in their half to get the lead right back at 10-9. The Eagles got the lead right back and then some in the seventh inning. A walk and a hit by pitch had them in business to start out the inning, then Hill hit a two-run triple to give Cold Springs an 11-10 lead. Back-to-back RBI singles by Bales Winfrey, followed by an RBI fielder’s choice by Archer, pushed the Eagle lead to 14-10. Mason Gable added a two-out RBI double to make it 15-10, then Winfrey made quick work of Clements in their half, as Cold Springs picked up a huge 15-10 win in their season opener against the Colts.
Hill (three hits) and Archer (one hit) each finished with three RBIs for Cold Springs. Bales added a hit and two RBIs in the contest. Winfrey and Gable each finished with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Nabors collected an RBI for the Eagles in the win.
Good Hope 7 – Danville 6 (Baseball)
After a scoreless first inning, Good Hope got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. A Danville error allowed Will Cordes to score to put the Raiders on the scoreboard first, then later on, Owen Armstrong scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Colten Whatley added an RBI single, then an RBI groundout made it 4-0. Caden Drake hit an RBI single and later on, Mason Drake crossed the plate to give Good Hope a 6-0 lead.
The Hawks hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to cut it to 6-1, then back-to-back two-run doubles and an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning tied the game up at six. Good Hope looked to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth. A single and an error put runners on the corners with one out, then Mason Drake hit an RBI single to give the Raiders a 7-6 lead. After giving up a one-out single, Carter Rutherford got the next batter to ground out into a double play to end the game. Good Hope ended up collecting a 7-6 win over Danville.
Mason Drake, Whatley and Caden Drake each finished with a hit and an RBI for Good Hope.
