HANCEVILLE, Ala. – After claiming an area championship and toppling Waterloo in the Sub-Regional round, Meek’s postseason run continued at the 1A Northwest Regional at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum Wednesday. The Lady Tigers matched up with No. 3 Belgreen in the Sweet 16 and unfortunately for the Tiger fans in the building, Meek was unable to keep pace with the Lady Bulldogs and the season came to an end for the Lady Tigers with a 54-34 loss.
Belgreen took a 4-0 lead to start the opening, but Addisyn Williams laid one in to get Meek on the board and trim the lead to 4-2. Early turnovers made it difficult for the Lady Tigers to get into a rhythm on the offensive end and the Bulldogs were able to pull ahead 8-3 later in the period. Williams knocked down a corner three to make it an 8-6 game with three minutes to play in the first and Aleah Addison buried a deep three to tie the game at 9 with just over a minute remaining in the first. Addison scored inside on the next possession to give Meek its first lead of the game at 11-9 going into the second quarter.
Another Addison basket kept the Lady Tigers in front 13-11 early in the second but Belgreen was able to move back ahead 15-13 midway through the period. The Lady Bulldogs continued to press and create turnovers, stretching their lead to 18-14 with just over two minutes to play in the first half. Belgreen added to its lead in the final two minutes of the second quarter and the Meek went into the locker room trailing 22-14 at the halftime break.
The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 26-14 early in the third quarter but Chloe Gilliland drilled a three to stop the run and cut the lead to nine with five minutes on the clock. A pair of Addison baskets made it a 36-23 game with less than a minute remaining in the period but after another score from Belgreen on the other end, the Lady Tigers went into the final frame trailing 38-23.
Baskets by Peyton Johnson and Laney Phillips held the lead to 15 early in the fourth quarter and Johnson scored another basket in the paint, Gilliand hit another three to make it a 49-32 game midway through the period. Unfortunately, Meek couldn’t chip away any more of the lead and the Lady Bulldogs pulled away to win it 54-34.
Addison led the Lady Tigers with 11 points in the loss. Williams posted nine points and Johnson and Gilliland each finished with six.
