FAIRVIEW, Ala. — The Fairview Lady Aggies’ JV team just completed their season earlier this month, and freshman Brooklynn Merriman talked about what she learned throughout the year and what it was like playing with a great group of teammates and coaches.

“It was not the best season I’ve had, but I made the most of it. I learned that you can’t without your whole team putting in effort and energy,” Merriman said. “It was great playing with the girls I love, and we had our fun and sad times together. I learned how to be a leader and become the best version of myself. My coaches were always helping me on my hard days, and they were hard on me, but I know it was just to get me better. I learned that effort can change the whole game.”

Even though she didn’t see a whole lot of improvement in her performance, the new stuff that Brooklynn did learn after each game helped her get better. She talked about some important goals that she has set for herself and for the team next season.

“I didn’t see a whole lot of improvement in my game, but I for sure learned something new after every game that I put into the next one. I will continue to work on my ball handling and shooting in the offseason,” she said. “My individual goals are to be more confident, grow each game as a player and to play my role as a team player. My team’s goals are to grow together and communicate on and off the court.”

Brooklyn feels blessed to be around a special group of girls this season and hopes to have a special year next season. She talked about a role model that she looks up to and the best advice that someone has ever given her,

“They were just so fun to be around. We would laugh and joke together. They would always be by my side, no matter what. I can’t thank them enough for that,” she said. “What will make us special to watch next season is the work that we will put in the offseason, and hopefully, show more success next season. I would have to say Darby Nichols. She is always hustling, and she’s so good at ball-handling and shooting. I want to work hard to be like her in the future. One of my good coaches told me that if you make a mistake, take it, learn from it, and move on.”

Brooklynn talked about how important it is to be a role model for the younger girls that are watching her play despite being just a freshman, and what she learned the most about herself and this team.

“It is very important to be a role model. I want little girls to look up to me and to want to be like me when they grow up,” she said. “I learned that I have potential. I just need to work towards it, and I also learned that my team can be successful if we all give effort and energy.”
