CULLMAN, Ala. – Mayor Woody Jacobs on Jan. 25, proclaimed the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3 “Catholic Schools Week” in the city of Cullman. Jennifer Arndt received the proclamation on behalf of Sacred Heart School and expressed appreciation to the City of Cullman for the recognition.

“Sacred Heart School was the first church school in Alabama to receive state accreditation in 1973. This longevity emphasizes our commitment to our students and community in providing a quality Catholic education since 1878,” smiled Arndt. “We feel that Sacred Heart plays an important part in the Cullman community. Being able to celebrate this with Catholic schools in our diocese, state and even the nation makes this week even more special!”

The proclamation reads:

“Whereas, the Catholic School System in the Diocese of Birmingham has been a consistent advocate of academic achievement by the young people of Sacred Heart School in Cullman for 146 years, and their support of community and family through teaching and example have set the highest standards for emulation by those who reside in Sacred Heart Parish in Cullman, Alabama; and,

Whereas, Sacred Heart’s parish, school, and families work together to form a cornerstone of excellence in education in Cullman, and the primary purpose of the school continues to be to provide an instruction program with a Catholic Christian atmosphere of love and guidance; and,

Whereas, the strengthening and encouraging role that Sacred Heart School continues to play in the lives of its many students and their families here in Cullman is worthy of all respect and admiration; and,

Whereas, National Catholic Schools Week, an annual celebration of Catholic education in the U.S., starts on the last Sunday in January and runs all week and includes events that focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and on the contributions of Catholic education to our communities and our nation; and,

Whereas, the National Catholic Schools Week theme for 2024-2026 is “Catholic Schools” United in Faith and Community.” This theme celebrates Catholic schools’ goal to form saints, to build a spirit of the gospel to benefit the human family, and to share the Christian vision of faith in order to create faith-filled communities.

Now, therefore, I, Woody Jacobs, as Mayor of the City of Cullman and on behalf of the City Council and our citizens, do hereby proclaim the week of January 28 – February 3, 2024, Catholic Schools Week in the City of Cullman and urge all our citizens to recognize the influence and impact Catholic education has on our society, and to celebrate the success of Sacred Heart School and its many contributions to our community.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cullman to be affixed on this, the 25th day of January, 2024.

Woody Jacobs

Mayor”
