PREP BASKETBALL: Warriors, Lady Warriors earn area wins over Lawrence County

WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Warriors hosted the Lawrence County Red Devils for a pair of area games Friday night and both varsity squads collected wins. The girls’ game saw the Lady Warriors cruise past the Lady Red Devils 73-30 while in the boys’ game, a huge fourth quarter from the Warriors helped them pull away from Lawrence County 65-54.

West Point 73 – Lawrence County 30 (Varsity Girls)

A quick layup by Laklin Shadix put West Point on the scoreboard first with only five seconds coming off the clock. Liberty Shadix drilled a three from the right wing to give the Lady Warriors a quick 5-0 lead. A pair of layups by Lawrence County cut it to 5-4, but a pair of free throws by Laklin Shadix gave the Lady Warriors a 7-4 lead. A basket by the Lady Red Devils made it a 10-7 game with a little over five minutes to go in the opening period. West Point took over the game after that, though, as threes by Liberty Shadix, Hallie Wheeler, and Laklin Shadix, plus six points by Kylee Quinn, quickly pushed the lead to 29-7 going into the second period.

Five straight points by Camryn Faulkner and another basket in the paint by Quinn made it a 36-7 game early in the second. Kealie Harbison drilled a pair of treys, and Camryn Faulkner added one from long-range as well to give West Point a 45-13 lead. Jaelyn Faulkner, Caitlee Simmons, and Liberty Shadix each hit a basket before the half, as the Lady Warriors took a commanding 51-14 lead into the locker room.

Threes by Camryn Faulkner and Wheeler, plus a pair of baskets by Laklin Shadix, helped swell the Lady Warrior lead to 61-16. Quinn added a basket in the third period, as West Point took a 64-22 lead into the final period, which was run under a hot clock. The Lady Warriors would go on to cruise past the Lady Red Devils, 73-30, to improve to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Four players finished in double-figure scoring for West Point, and every player scored at least two points in the contest. Laklin Shadix finished with 12 points. Liberty Shadix, Quinn and Camryn Faulkner each put up 11 points, while Wheeler and Harbison each added nine points.

West Point 65 – Lawrence County 54 (Varsity Boys)

Five straight points by Lawrence County gave them the early 5-0 lead, but four quick points by Jay Lamar made it a 5-4 game. Kolten Perry drilled a corner three to give West Point a 7-5 lead with 3:38 remaining in the opening period, but a 7-0 run by the Red Devils saw them get the lead right back at 12-7. Lamar knocked down a trey from the right wing to cut it to 12-10 going into the second period.

Baskets by Jaxon Shelton and Perry gave West Point a 14-12 lead early in the second. Layups by Jacob Harbison and Perry pushed the Warrior lead to 18-14 with 3:34 left in the first half. Another made basket by Perry gave West Point a 21-14 lead, but four straight points by the Red Devils made it a 21-18 game with less than two minutes to go in the first half. A four-point play by Lawrence County tied the game up at 22 and another basket gave them a 24-22 lead, but a basket on the other end by J.D. Cochran tied the game up at 24 going into the locker room.

West Point got off to a quick start in the third quarter, as Perry and Harbison scored the first six points of the period, to give them a 30-24 lead. A 9-1 run by Lawrence County, though, gave them the lead right back at 33-31. A basket by Cochran tied the game up at 33, but the Red Devils scored the next seven points to take a 40-33 lead late in the quarter. Pressley Burtis drilled a huge trey to cut it to 40-36, and later on, Shelton knocked down a floater to make it a 42-38 game going into the fourth period.

Two quick layups by Harbison to start the fourth quarter tied the game up at 42, and later on, Lamar made a tough basket in the paint to give West Point a 45-44 lead, but the Red Devils drilled a trey to get the lead right back at 47-45. Another layup by Harbison, plus a trey by Burtis, gave the Warriors a 50-47 lead. Burtis added a pair from the line to push the lead to 52-47 with a little over three minutes to go in the game. Made baskets by Harbison and Shelton increased the West Point lead to 56-49. A pair of free throws by Lawrence County cut it to 56-51, but West Point wouldn’t let them get any closer after that, as Lamar hit all six of his free throws, Shelton added a pair from the line, and Perry knocked down a free throw as well, as West Point picked up a huge 65-54 win over Lawrence County.

Perry and Lamar each finished with 16 points for West Point (10-4, 1-1). Harbison added 12 points. Burtis ended up with nine points and Shelton collected eight points.

West Point will remain home Monday night to take on Vinemont.
