‘It is just as rewarding for the officers involved’

CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Police Department’s longest running community policing event, Shop With a Cop, is happening this Saturday, Dec. 16.

The popular annual Christmastime event has been going strong for a decade.

CPD Public Relations Officer Adam Clark said most of the participating children are chosen by Brooks’ Place – the Child Advocacy Center of Cullman. Others are chosen based on requests received by the CPD.

“Every child gets to shop with a police officer and volunteers at the event,” Clark said. “This year we are taking 16 kids shopping at Walmart, where they get to spend between $300-$400 each, depending on the amount of money we raise.  After we are done shopping, we take the kids to Chick-fil-A for lunch.”

Clark said this program is funded by local businesses and individual donations from the community.

“This program gives the kids a chance at having a happy Christmas and also, a positive experience with a police officer,” he smiled. “Honestly though, it is just as rewarding for the officers involved. It truly is a remarkable experience.”
