AUBURN – Coming off a gut-wrenching loss to the No. 2 team in the nation, Clemson, last week the Auburn Tigers looked to get back on track Saturday evening as they took on the Arkansas State Red Wolves and get on track they did. Auburn put up 706 yards of offense on their way to a 51-14 drumming of the Red Wolves.
Auburn claimed the first score of the night midway through the first quarter. With the ball on their own 34, Sean White busted up the middle over the left guard for a big 14 yards and a Tiger first down. Two plays later Auburn was faced with a third-and-5 and in danger of the drive bogging down, but no one told Kerryon Johnson that as he took the handoff from White around the right side then reversed back to the left, hurdling tacklers and diving for the end zone for the 47-yard score. Daniel Carlson added the PAT giving Auburn the 7-0 advantage.
Arkansas State answered the drive on their next possession thanks to the arm of quarterback Chad Voytik. He was 3 of 3 on the drive for 91 yards including a 68-yard strike to Christian Booker down to the Auburn 1. On the very next play, Voytik called his own number and snuck the ball up the middle for the touchdown. JD Houston added the PAT to tie the game at 7-7.
Not to be outdone, the Tigers put the pedal to the metal and answered with a touchdown almost immediately. Sean White was the catalyst for the drive hitting two big passes, a 13-yard strike to Darius Slayton and a 42-yard bomb to Kyle Davis to set Auburn up with first-and-goal from the Red Wolves’ 6. From there it was all Kamryn Pettway with three rushes that culminated in a 1-yard TD. Carlson’s kick was true and Auburn grabbed a 14-7 lead that they would never relinquish.
Not content with a single score lead, Gus Malzahn and the Tigers kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter, adding three more touchdowns. White hit Tony Stevens for a 24-yard score and Will Hastings for a 29-yard TD sandwiched around a 20-yard fake field goal that was flipped to and run in by Carlson. He also added a last-second field goal as the Auburn Tigers went to the locker room up 38-7 at the half.
Pettway carried the ball 10 times in the first half for 103 yards. Johnson had 14 carries for 101 yards. He also added a pair of touchdowns. White was 10 of 14 passing for 173 yards and two TDs.
The second half was much of the same as Auburn continued to dominate the game both on the scoreboard and on the stat sheet. The Tigers scored three more times in the second half on a touchdown pass from White to Stevens and a pair of Carlson field goals, giving him 21 of Auburn’s 51 points on the night. The Auburn Tigers picked up their first win of the 2016 season, 51-14 over Arkansas State as they get ready to take on Texas A&M at Jordan-Hare next week.
Auburn finished the game with a staggering 706 yards of offense on 85 plays.
