COUNTY VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: Holly Pond, Good Hope, West Point advance on day 1

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – This year’s Cullman County Volleyball Tournament tipped off at Hanceville’s Lane Horton Gymnasium Monday night and after day one, the semifinals are now set. On the varsity side of the court, Holly Pond, Good Hope and West Point swept Vinemont, Cold Springs and Hanceville respectively to advance to the semifinals and on the JV side, Holly Pond topped Cold Springs 2-1 and Good Hope and Fairview both swept Vinemont and Hanceville to advance as well.

In the varsity bracket, Holly Pond will play top-seeded Fairview Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a spot in the county finals and Good Hope will clash with West Point in the semifinals Thursday at 4 p.m. In the JV tournament’s semifinal round, the top-seeded West Point Lady Warriors will play Holly Pond Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Good Hope will take on Fairview at 5 p.m.

Holly Pond 3 – Vinemont 0 (Game One)

Holly Pond got off to a quick 4-0 lead behind a kill by Kamryn Tankersley, and later increased their lead to 10-4 on a point by Emma Earl. Vinemont later trimmed it to 12-9 on a point by Maggie Burks, but the Lady Broncos scored six straight points to push their lead to 19-9. A pair of aces from Morgan Flanagan cut it to 24-15, but Holly Pond was able to get the final point, as they ended up taking the first set, 25-15.

The second set was tightly contested. Holly Pond held a slim 6-5 lead, but Vinemont went on a run, scoring six straight points, as an ace from Brooklyn Knott gave them an 11-6 lead. They later pushed their lead to 13-7 on an ace from Carley Stephens, but the Lady Broncos went on a run of their own to tie things up at 13. Holly Pond held a 20-17 lead late in the set, but Vinemont came back to take a 21-20 lead. The Lady Eagles had a 23-22 lead late in the set, but Holly Pond scored the final three points, including the game-winning ace from Maycie Black, to take the second set, 25-23.

Holly Pond got off to an 8-4 lead in the third set, but Vinemont trimmed it to 12-10 later on in the set. A point by Emma Earl gave the Lady Broncos a 16-10 lead, but a kill and an ace from Flanagan cut it to 16-12. Holly Pond took over after that, pushing their lead to 22-12 on a point by Tankersley. They ended up taking the third set, 25-15, to finish off their sweep of Vinemont.

Good Hope 3 – Cold Springs 0 (Game Two)

Good Hope jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead behind an ace from Ivey Maddox, and later made it 12-4 on a point by Charly Johnson. Cold Springs trimmed the deficit to just five at 12-7 on an ace from Kaley Barger, but the Lady Raiders went on a 7-0 run, which included a pair of aces from Cameron Koch, as they pushed their lead to 19-7. A kill by Maddox made it 21-8. A kill by Barger cut it to 21-12, but Good Hope went on a 4-2 run to end the set, including the game-winning kill by Maddox, to take the first one, 25-14.

The Lady Raiders got off to another red-hot start, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead, behind aces from Maddox and Emma Bailey. They later made it 10-3 on another ace from Maddox, but the Lady Eagles scored the next four points, including a kill by Cheyenne Bishop, to cut it to 10-7. The Lady Raiders quickly swelled their lead to 15-7 on a point by Johnson, and later made it 21-8. Good Hope went on to take the second set, 25-10.

Good Hope got off to another fast start, scoring six of the first seven points, to take an early 6-1 lead. Cold Springs later cut it to 7-4 on an ace from Malaya Taylor, but as quick as a flash, the Lady Raiders went on an 8-2 run to push their lead to 15-6. The Lady Eagles later made it a 17-11 game, but Good Hope increased their lead to 23-14, but a kill by Ciara Calvert and an ace from Ella Bruer helped Cold Springs cut it to 23-18. The Lady Raiders collected the final two points of the set to finish off their sweep of the Lady Eagles, 25-18.

West Point 3 – Hanceville 0 (Game Three)

West Point got off to a 4-2 lead in the first set behind a point by Liberty Shadix, but Hanceville responded with a 6-3 run, which included a kill and an ace from Alex Twitty, as they grabbed an 8-7 lead. They later made it 11-8 on back-to-back aces from Charity Barnes, but the Lady Warriors came back to tie things up at 14 on an ace from Charli Aris. Zoe Pitts collected a trio of aces during the Lady Bulldogs’ 6-0 run, as that gave them a 20-14 lead. West Point responded with a run of their own, as a pair of aces from Katie Beth Yovino, and a kill by Laklin Shadix, helped them tie things up at 21. The Lady Warriors finished the set strong, as they ended up collecting a 25-22 win in the first one.

West Point carried that momentum into the second set, jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead, behind an ace from Caitlee Simmons. Hanceville cut it to 5-3, but the Lady Warriors quickly widened their lead to 12-4 on a kill by Macie Brown. A pair of aces from Barnes helped the Lady Bulldogs cut it to 16-11, but it would be all West Point after that. The Lady Warriors went on a 9-1 run to end the set, as they ended up taking it, 25-12.

The Lady Warriors didn’t waste any time getting off to a big lead in the third set, as aces from Patton Fell and Aris, plus a trio of kills by Liberty Shadix, gave them a 15-2 lead. A point by Aaliyah Twitty and an ace from Pitts made it a 15-4 game, but West Point proved to be too much for Hanceville in the end. The Lady Warriors ended up rolling past Hanceville, 25-6, to finish off their sweep of the Lady Bulldogs.
