BREMEN, Ala. – In this interview, I talked to Cold Springs junior Matt Williams about the experience he gained last season and what it was like to play with a great group of teammates.
“I feel it went pretty good, but obviously, it could’ve gone better. I learned that we have to finish if we really want to achieve our true potential. Only a few plays separated us from a 4-6 season compared to a 7-3 season and possible playoff potential,” Williams said. “It was a special season and a special group of guys. Our season didn’t reflect how good we really were. You could count on everyone to make plays when we needed them, but it doesn’t always go our way.”
Matt feels blessed to be playing for head coach Brendan Voce and learned a very important thing from him. Even he has improved in all aspects of his game, he has continued to work on his game even more as he prepares for the 2023 season.
“He’s a hard-nosed old-school and tough football coach who coaches like no one else. He is the best coach I have ever had. He has taught me a lot, including how to be a man. I’m grateful for him and our whole coaching staff, mostly coach Voce and coach Matt,” Williams said. “I believe I have improved drastically in all aspects of my game. I will continue to work on improving every factor of myself, because I am not perfect anywhere.”
He has some goals set for the upcoming season. He talked about what will make this team special to watch and his role models.
“We want to play in November, where the best of the best play. Individually, my dad was an All-State selection 30 years ago, so my goal will always be to one-up him. I want to be first-team All-State, All-County, and All-Area,” he said. “What will make our team special to watch is the physicality, grit, and overall underdog mentality that we’ve adopted. My biggest role models in football are my dad, Coach Voce, and Coach Matt. Also, senior Josh Winfrey, who pushes me to be better.”
He talked about the best advice that someone ever gave him and what he’s looking forward to the most this upcoming season.
“The best advice that someone ever gave me is to play every play like it’s your last, because you’re not guaranteed to play after high school,” he said. “I’m looking forward to show everybody how good this team really is.”
