Mrs. Bittinger, a beloved educator and cherished member of the Cullman County community, passed away on April 11, 2025, at her residence in Hanceville; leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and lifelong service to generations of students. She was born on June 28, 1940, in Athens, Alabama. With a heart full of compassion and a spirit rooted in kindness, Martha truly loved everyone she encountered and believed in the potential of every child.

She devoted over 58 remarkable years to the Cullman County School System, spending the majority of her career at Hanceville Schools. Throughout those decades, she touched the lives of approximately 1,900 students, guiding them not only through their lessons, but along the path of life. Her classroom was more than a place of learning—it was a haven of encouragement, understanding, and growth. Children were at the heart of everything Martha did. Her passion for teaching was matched only by her unwavering belief in the importance of shaping young minds. Whether it was a kind word, a patient lesson, or a warm smile, she gave her all every single day.

Survivors include her son, Robert Patrick Bittinger; and a host of many loving friends and extended family members.

Mrs. Bittinger was preceded in death by her husband, James Erwin Bittinger; and parents, John Clarice and Eva Owens-Holt.

Martha Bittinger’s legacy lives on in the countless students she taught, the colleagues she inspired, and the community she so dearly loved. She leaves behind a lasting imprint on the world—one built with chalk dust, open arms, and a boundless heart.

Hanceville Funeral Home is honored to serve the Bittinger Family.
