HANCEVILLE, Ala. – An Easter Bake Sale will be held on Saturday, April 19, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in the parking lot of Warehouse Discount Grocery in Hanceville to support travel expenses for the Hanceville Elementary Archery Team, which recently qualified for the NASP US Eastern National Tournament for the first time in school history.
Organized by parents and family members of the student archers, the Easter Bake Sale will feature a wide assortment of individually wrapped baked goods, donated by families and community members. Full-size desserts—including entire cakes, pies, and full sheets of brownies—will also be available for purchase. All proceeds will go directly toward helping the nearly 30 archers and their families cover travel costs, including food, fuel, and hotel stays for the three-day national event, taking place May 8–10.
“This is an event hosted by a group of family members of the archers on their own accord—it is not hosted by Hanceville Elementary School,” explained Brittani Armstrong Coker, one of the event organizers and proud sibling and aunt to two members of the team. “We just want to help support these kids in any way we possibly can.”
While the school is covering registration costs for the competition, all other expenses are left to the families. “We are estimating a cost of around $150 for a hotel room per night and an average of about $150 in fuel per family as well, plus the cost of food while traveling,” said Coker.
Coker encouraged community members to stop by the bake sale not only to support a good cause, but also to take some of the stress out of Easter weekend. “We chose this date in hopes to both raise money for the children and to help our community by providing fresh baked goods for families to share at their Easter gatherings,” she said. “It saves families the hassle of baking themselves, so they can spend more time together instead of in the kitchen. It also helps the kids of our community. That’s a win-win.”
Those who cannot attend but still want to contribute can donate cash or prepaid gift cards for food or fuel. “Anyone interested in donating monetarily to the archery team’s travel expenses is encouraged to do so in cash and/or in prepaid gift cards. All gifted donations will be equally divided among the student’s families,” said Coker, who is handling all donations directly.
“I would just like to reiterate that 100% of the money raised off of this bake sale will be divided equally among all participating archers’ families,” said Coker. “We hope our community will rally together and support these kids — because they truly deserve all the support we can give them. They have worked SO VERY hard to accomplish such a feat.”
Coker, who is also a substitute teacher and youth coach, emphasized the pride she and other supporters have for the team. “I am Bear Armstrong’s big sister and Layne Evans’ aunt, so I’m heavily invested in the success of this team. There’s a running joke that I’m the ‘community aunt,’ and I’ll take that title proudly,” she shared. “I support these kids with everything in me and I cannot wait to watch them crush this competition. I am so proud of them.”
For anyone interested in donating baked goods or a monetary donation, contact Brittani Armstrong Coker on Facebook to arrange for a drop-off on Friday, April 18. All monetary donations must be made in cash.
