GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The Good Hope Lady Raiders hosted the West Point for county championship rematch on Tuesday afternoon and it was close for most of the contest, but a huge sixth inning from the Raiders helped propel them to a 12-2 win over the Warriors.

After a scoreless first inning, West Point got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. Kealie Harbison drew a two-out walk, and Averee Folds followed that up with a single to center field to put runners on the corners. Folds stole second, and during the play, a pair of errors allowed both Harbison and Folds to score to give the Lady Warriors a 2-0 lead. Good Hope got those runs back in their half.

Haley Lay led off the inning with a single, and Molly Benefield followed that up with a double to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Natalie Miller hit a sacrifice fly to cut it to 2-1, and Addyson Burgess hit the first pitch she saw up the middle for an RBI single to tie the game up at two. The Lady Raiders broke the tie in their next at-bats. Maggie O’Neil reached on a bunt single, and after she stole second, Lizzy Steed hit an RBI double to left field to give them a 3-2 lead. Later that inning, Lay hit an RBI double of her own to right field to make it 4-2.

The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning. Kylee Smith drew a one-out walk, and a Campbell Koch single put runners on first and second with one out. Lay hit an RBI single up the middle to extend Good Hope’s lead to 5-2. The Lady Raiders quickly ended the game in the bottom of the sixth. Three straight singles by Miller, Burgess, and Brooklyn Lambert loaded the bases to start out the inning. They kept the hit parade gong after that, as O’Neil, Steed, and Smith all collected RBI singles to put them ahead 8-2. Koch drew a bases-loaded walk, and Lay got hit by the pitch to make it 10-2. Benefield made it 11-2 on an RBI single, and another sacrifice fly by Miller gave Good Hope the 12-2 win over the Lady Warriors.

Lay led the way for the Lady Raiders with a three hits and three RBIs. Steed (two hits) and Miller (one hit) each added a pair of RBIs, and all but one Good Hope player finished with at least one RBI in the contest. For West Point, Katie Beth Yovino and Folds each finished with a hit in the game.

Cold Springs 9 – Winston County 8 (Softball)

An RBI single gave Winston County the early lead, but Cold Springs quickly countered in the bottom of the first inning. They quickly put runners on second and third with nobody out, and Sadie Smith hit a two-run single to left field to give the Lady Eagles a 2-1 lead. Later that inning, a passed ball made it 3-1, and on the next pitch, Cheyenne Bishop hit an RBI double to left field to make it 4-1. Bishop later scored to extend their lead to 5-1.

The Lady Yellow Jackets cut it to 5-2 on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third. Cloe Shelton and Maddie Davis each scored on an error in Cold Springs’ half of the third to make it 7-2, and a wild pitch put the Lady Eagles ahead, 8-2. Winston County hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to trim the deficit to 8-5. The Lady Yellow Jackets were far from done, though, as an error and an RBI single in the top of the fifth made it a one-run game. Another RBI single in the top of the sixth tied the game up at eight. Neither team was able to break the tie in the seventh, so the game would be decided in extra innings.

Cold Springs ended things in their half. Brooke Rowan led off the inning with a single and moved up to second on the next pitch. A ground ball put her ninety feet from scoring, and two pitches later, Shelton’s sacrifice fly brought home Rowan, and the Lady Eagles ended up winning a wild game over Winston County 9-8.
