
CULLMAN, Ala. – After collecting a pair of wins over the weekend, the Bearcats continued area play with a matchup against Mortimer Jordan Tuesday night. Cullman jumped out to an early lead and starting pitcher Cooper Loftin kept the Blue Devils’ bats at bay to secure a 4-2 win and the 6A, Area 13 title. Loftin tossed six innings to earn the win, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out nine batters.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bearcats took the lead in the bottom of the second. Tyler Brock reached base on an error and Knox Mauldin was hit by a pitch and Cooper Loftin drew a walk to load the bases. Brock scored on a passed ball to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead and Brooks Heatherly lined an RBI single into center field to make it 2-0. Colter Bowen drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in a third run and a sacrifice fly from Bennett Johnson made it a 4-0 game going into the third inning.
The Blue Devils put one run on the board in the third to trim the lead to 4-1 and both teams had a hard time getting their bats going the rest of the way. After three scoreless innings, Mortimer Jordan was able to push one across in the top of the seventh to trim the lead to 4-2 but it wasn’t enough to overcome Cullman’s lead and the ‘Cats held on to win it 4-2.
Heatherly, Bowen and Johnson each recorded a hit and an RBI in the win.
The Bearcats will continue the series at Mortimer Jordan on Thursday.
Fairview 15 – Brewer 5 (Baseball)
Camden Cullen scored on a passed ball to give Fairview a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the Aggies added to their lead in the second. Barrett York scored on an error and Collin Nelson scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game going into the third.
Brewer responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2 but Fairview’s bats put more runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Nelson scored on a bases-loaded walk to make it a 4-2 game and a few pitches later, an error allowed two more runs to score and stretched the lead to 6-2. Connor Scott scored on a fielder’s choice later in the inning to extend the lead to 7-2 going into the fifth.
The Patriots pushed three more runs across in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 7-5 but that was as close as they got the rest of the way. An RBI double from Lincoln Wright made it 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth and an error allowed Nic Gregory to score and make it 9-5 two pitches later. Wright scored on a passed ball later in the inning to put Fairview in front 10-5 and Jackson Earnest plated two more runs with an RBI double to left field. York lined an RBI single into center field to make it a 13-5 game and after an error allowed York to score later in the inning, Wright drew a walk with the bases loaded to wrap up a 15-5 area win for the Aggies.
Earnest (one hit) led Fairview with three RBIs in the win and Wright (one hit) and Scott each posted a pair of RBIs.
Russellville 5 – West Point 2 (Baseball)
Russellville jumped out to an early lead in this one, scoring once in the bottom of the first, twice in the second and another run in the third to make it a 4-0 game going into the fourth inning. After a pair of scoreless innings, the Tigers added another run in the sixth to make it a 5-0 game, but West Point was able to get on the board in the final frame.
Cade Welborn led off the top of the seventh with a double into center field and Cooper Howard followed with a single to put runners on the corners. An error allowed both of them to score later in the inning, cutting the lead to three but that was as close as the Warriors could climb back and Russellville held on to win it 5-2.
Welborn, Howard and Jay Lamar each recorded a hit in the loss.
Winston County 4 – Cold Springs 1 (Baseball)
Winston County took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but after a scoreless second inning, the Eagles tied things up at 1 in the top of the third when Brandon Chasteen scored on a fielder’s choice.The Yellow Jackets moved back ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third and after a scoreless fourth inning, Winston County scored two more runs in the fifth to make it a 4-1 game.
Cold Springs was unable to chip into any more of the lead the rest of the way and the Yellow Jackets held on to win it 4-1.
Cooper Johnson (one hit) finished with an RBI in the loss and Brady Phillips and Chasteen each recorded a pair of hits.
Locust Fork 5 – Holly Pond 4 (Baseball)
Locust Fork scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead but after a pair of scoreless innings, the Broncos pulled ahead in the top of the fourth. Boston Gibbs scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 1 and a balk allowed another run to score a few pitches later, putting Holly Pond ahead 2-1.
The Hornets scored two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth to retake a 3-2 lead and they added another run in the fifth to make it a 4-2 game. Locust Fork stretched its lead to 5-2 in the sixth, but the Broncos wouldn’t go away quietly. Sawyer Olinger led off the top of the seventh with a double and Carson Ryan was hit by a pitch to give Holly Pond a pair of runners. Olinger scored on an error to trim the lead to 5-3 and a few pitches later, Ryan scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 5-4. Unfortunately, the Broncos were unable to chip away any more of the lead and Locust Fork held on to defeat Holly Pond 5-4.
Olinger finished with a pair of hits in the loss and Gibbs and Derrek Nelson each added a hit as well.
J.B. Pennington 5 – Hanceville 1 (Baseball)
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Hanceville responded in the top of the second when Jackson Howell scored on an error to tie things up at 1. After a scoreless third inning, J.B. Pennington pushed another run across in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 2-1 game. The Tigers added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull ahead 5-1 and Hanceville wasn’t able to answer the scoring run, allowing Pennington to claim a 5-1 win over the Bulldogs.
Howell recorded the lone hit for Hanceville in the loss.
