ADDISON, Ala. – The fifth-ranked Addison Bulldogs hosted No. 7 Athens Bible Trojans for an area double header Tuesday night, and they took care of business, clinching the area title with a 10-0 win in game one. Addison kept the momentum going with a 13-0 win in the second game as well. Addison will host the first round of the state playoffs next week and Athens Bible will travel for its first-round game.
Addison 10- Athens Bible 0 (Game One)
Addison started their ace Kiah Lake, and he pitched as well as he possibly could on this night. After getting the Trojans three up three down in the top of the first, Lake helped his own cause with a two out two run single in the bottom of the first. Lake’s single brought home Jed Wilkins and Lane Stewart to give Addi the 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning Addison struck for two more runs as Wilkins led off with a walk, Tucker Thompson stroked a double to put runners at second and third with no one out. Stone Talley grounded out to score Wilkins and move Thompson to third. Stewart grounded out to bring in Thompson. After three innings, Addison led 4-0 and the Trojans were still without a baserunner.
In the top of the fourth inning, Trojan Luke Murrell led off with a double that came with inches of being caught by Wilkins in centerfield. This was the first Trojan baserunner and hit. A Lake wild pitch moved Murrell to third with no one out. This is where Lake showed what he was made of. Lake got a hard-hit ground ball right at third base, holding the runner at third. Lake then got two infield pop ups to strand the Trojan runner at third and keep the Trojans off the board.
Addison would explode for four runs in the fourth inning to salt the game away. After a one out walk to Dathan Cleghorn, Wilkins singled to center to move Cleghorn to third base. Thompson then singled, scoring Wilkins and Cleghorn to move the Addison lead to 6-0. Talley then crushed a ball to centerfield for a double to score Thompson. An error and a wild pitch allowed Thompson to score, and Addison led 8-0 after 4 innings.
Lake mowed down the Trojans in the top of the fifth and Addison plated two runs to end the game after five innings, 10-0. Stewart was able to single in two runs to get the magic number of ten needed to end the game.
Lake went the five innings for the one hit shutout. Lake struck out five and walked no one.
Thompson went 2-3 with 3 runs scored, a stolen base and 2 RBIs. Talley went 1-3 with 2 RBIs, a double and 2 stolen bases. Stewart went 1-3 with 3 RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored. Wilkins went 1-2 with 3 runs scored, a stolen base and a walk. Lake went 1-1 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs.
Addison 13 – Athens Bible 0 (Game Two)
Addison didn’t waste any time in dominating the Trojans in game two. Addison starter Tucker Thompson allowed Trojan Ethan Barnes to single in the first with two outs but was able to get out of the inning. Addison scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. The Trojan pitcher walked two of the first three batters and with runners on second and third with one out, Stewart squared up a single scoring two runs to give Addison the quick 2-0 lead. Lake singled to push Stewart to third base and then Jaxson Williams singled to score Stewart to give Addison the 3-0 lead. Kaden Dyson hit a sacrifice fly to right field and that scored Lake. At the end of the first inning Addison looked focused and determined to get the sweep of the Trojans as they led 4-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Bulldogs were able to plate three runs without recording a hit. With one out, Wilkins walked and was able to advance to third base on a two-base error on the Trojan pitcher. Thompson was then hit by a pitch, then pinch runner Casin “Wheels” Hill stole second base. Talley grounded out to second, but Wilkins was able to score on the play to up Addison’s lead to 5-0. Stewart was then hit by a pitch and after a wild pitch, “Wheels” came home and Stewart went to third. Stewart scored on an error by the Trojans and at the end of the second inning, Addison had extended their lead to 7-0.
The Addison third was a good inning for the Dawgs. With one out , Carter Pratt reached on an error and then stole second base. After a hard hit line drive out by his twin brother, Owen Pratt, Wilkins deployed a ball to dead center field and the ball landed a good five to ten feet beyond the fence for a two-run home run. Thompson, Talley and Stewart then followed with three consecutive doubles. Talley and Stewart’s double each scoring a run. Lake singled home the final run of the inning and Addison was up 12-0.
The bottom of the fourth, Wilkins grounded out, but this allowed Owen Pratt to score as he led off the inning with a walk, a stolen base and advanced to third on an error.
The Bulldogs got the Trojans out in order in the 5th and that was the ball game. Addison had won 13-0 in five innings.
Tucker Thompson went four innings for the win and allowed only the first inning single. Thompson struck out four while walking none. Carter Pratt came in and finished off the fifth, getting a strike out.
Wilkins went 1-2 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs, a home run, 2 walks and a stolen base. Talley went 2-3 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, 2 doubles, 2 stolen bases and a walk.
Stewart went 2-3 with 3 runs scored 3 RBIs and a double. Lake went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Thompson went 1-2 with 2 runs scored, a double and a stolen base.
Addison Head Coach Lee Williams,
“We are playing really good baseball right now. Our last three series we played the No. 1 team in 1A Hackleburg and beat them, swept two games from Meek and just swept a ranked Athens Bible team,” Williams said. “I challenged my guys to show up and take care of business and they have. I believe the biggest difference in this team from last year’s is their mentality. We are tougher mentally this year than last. We don’t let the little things get us down. We are also hitting much better with men on base. We left a ton of guys on base last year and we just aren’t doing that this year.”
Addison will host Carbon Hill on Friday and then they will host a first-round playoff game next week.
