Mark Benjamin Taylor was born at Mitchel Air Field near Hempstead, New York on September 30, 1955. He passed away in San Marcos on April 2, 2025.

Mark married the love of his life, Jo Ellen Korthals, in 1989. In 1990 they were blessed with a son, Benjamin Korthals Taylor. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Ed Taylor. He is survived by his wife Jo and son Ben of San Marcos, by his brother Jeff Taylor and wife Pam of Cullman, Alabama, and by eight nieces and two nephews.

Mark and Jeff were raised by their parents while living in and traveling to places near and far. The family lived in Riverhead, New York; Madison, Wisconsin; Biloxi, Mississippi; Tripoli, Libya; Phoenix, Arizona; Melbourne, Florida; Columbus, Mississippi; and San Antonio.

Mark earned a B.A.in Political Science at Mississippi State University and a J.D. at St. Mary’s University School of Law. He was a senior associate editor at the St. Mary’s Law Journal.

The bulk of Mark’s practice was in municipal and utilities law for the cities of Victoria and San Marcos and the Alliance Regional Water Authority. Mark was proudest, however, of his volunteer work, and that of his family, which connected them to nature and protected the San Marcos springs and river, and conserved parkland and natural areas in and near San Marcos.

A private memorial service is planned. Donations in Mark’s memory may be made to the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance, the San Marcos River Foundation, or the Great Springs Project.
