CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Bearcat Band hosted its annual Dinner with the Drumline event on Thursday, April 3. It saw a big turnout, with food from Johnny’s Bar-B-Q, door prizes and performances by the Cullman High School and Middle School percussion ensembles.
Throughout the spring semester, the ensembles rehearse supplemental percussion material for the event. The concert was free, but there was a charge for the dinner to raise money for percussion equipment.
Inspired by fundraising events hosted by other schools, Assistant Band Director Doug Teuscher took the traditional “dinner and a show” idea and put his own spin on it. “The idea is a ‘dinner and a show.’ I do not believe in charging admission for any student concerts,” he said. “This way, we can raise money for our program while keeping the concert portion free of charge.”
The ensembles performed various selections, showcasing their talents and skills. Graduating seniors were also recognized for their dedication to the band program, some having been involved for as long as seven years.
The fundraiser’s goal was to raise money to support the percussion program since the cost of purchasing products such as drumheads, drumsticks, cymbals and overall equipment maintenance can add up while working with consumable equipment. Events like this help ensure that students have the tools to continue growing and performing to the best of their abilities.
Teuscher said the percussion ensembles hold a special place in his heart. “Many times in band, percussion fills an accompanist role. In percussion ensembles, the drummers get to be the main focus of the music,” he said.
Events like Dinner with the Drumline raise the needed funds and give these musicians the equipment they need to succeed and the spotlight they deserve.
