CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman was back home on a wet and chilly Monday afternoon to host a varsity matchup against the Patriots of Brewer. The Bearcats fell behind early and rallied to cut into the lead as the game went on, but they couldn’t keep pace with Brewer’s bats and eventually fell to the Patriots 17-10.

Brewer plated three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead but the ‘Cats were able to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Hattie Graham singled to left field and Samantha Johnson and Reese Hopper each drew walks to load the bases. Two pitches later, Kynlei Storey knocked an RBI single into right field to cut the lead to 3-1 going into the second inning.

The Patriots tacked on three more runs in the top of the second to extend their lead to 6-1 and an error allowed two more Brewer runs to score in the top of third, stretching the lead to 8-1. The momentum continued in the top of the fourth when the Patriots pushed four more runs across the plate to take a commanding, 12-1 lead over the Bearcats.

However, Cullman wouldn’t go down without a fight. Allie Johnson led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field and after Abby Maples laid down a bunt during the next at bat, Brewer committed a pair of errors that allowed both runners to score and trimmed the lead to 12-3 going into the fifth. Cullman continued to chip away in the bottom of the fifth. Storey and Johnson each drew walks to put a pair of runners on base and Graham launched a 3-run home run over the left field fence to make it a 12-6 game with two more innings to play.

Hopper led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and Storey followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Dracen Bates allowed Storey to score, cutting the lead to 12-7. A few pitches later, Presley Burden lined an RBI double into center field to plate Hopper and make it a 12-8 game going into the seventh.

Unfortunately for the home crowd, the ‘Cats weren’t able to climb back any closer than that as Brewer’s bats came alive once again in the top of the seventh, putting five more runs on the board to extend the lead to 17-8.

Maples led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and Graham followed with a single to give Cullman a pair of runners. A sacrifice fly from Johnson allowed Maples to score later in the inning and cut the lead to 17-9. Storey punched an RBI single to right field to score Graham and make it a 17-10 game, but it was the final run the Bearcats could get on the board and Brewer held on to win it 17-10.

Graham led the way at the plate with four hits and three RBIs in the loss. Storey added four hits and a pair of RBIs as well. Bates and Burden each recorded a hit and an RBI for Cullman.

The Bearcats will be back on their home field tomorrow to host Jasper.
