Three Cullman artists are among those who have paintings on exhibit in the Southeast Jury Show at the Birmingham Museum. Mrs. Finis St. John, Jr. has two paintings chosen for the show which will last through April 27. Mrs. E. B. Barnes and Mrs. Louis Graf, Jr. each has a painting on display.
Cullman’s F.F.A. String Band walked away with top honors at the ten-county North Alabama district Future Farmers contest last Saturday in Albertville. This band, which includes Tommy Lee, Jimmy Lee, Melvin Thornton and W. D. Derrick, will compete in the State contest later this year.
In a “straw” ballot on candidates for governor taken at the Alabama League of Municipalities Convention in Mobile last week by the Mobile Press 334 ballots were cast with Wallace getting 139; de Graffenried, 68; Connor, 36; Folsom, 30; Boutwell and Gallion, 20 each; Ralph Price, 9; Henderson, 3; and Jennings, 0. (Price is a candidate for lieutenant governor.)
“Business” will be the theme of the annual convention of Automobile Dealers Association of Alabama on April 8-9 in Montgomery. Roy Drinkard of Cullman is one of the association directors.
While in Indianapolis, Ind., last week end Mr. and Mrs. Chester McClendon found one of the feature articles in The Indianapolis Star was concerning Alabama Governor’s race. The title was “Vaudeville Tactics Lure Alabama Voters.” The article pointed out the “importance” of “rural rhythm” in this state’s political campaigns, listing the candidates – at least 5 of them – who take along “mountain music” with them on the campaign trail.
After three years in Madrid, Spain, Lt. Col. and Mrs. Thomas H. McNeil and children, Toni and Paul, will arrive in Cullman April 20 for a 30 day furlough. He has been in military service nineteen years and will, after the visit here, go to Bedford, Mass., for a new assignment.
Leaving Friday for tour of duty as skipper of a squadron on the Midway in the Mediterranean will be Commander Rayburn Bradford, who is now based on the West Coast.
Visitor at The Tribune last Saturday was a former Cullman boy, Albert Doub, now a resident of New Hebron, Miss. In discussing bygone days there, Albert stated that he remembers when the L&N tracks were at street level and the railroad station was east of the Al Richter building, located on First Avenue West.
Elected president of S.T.A.R. Club on Tuesday was Gail Kinney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dillard Kinney.
Back to Savannah, Ga., has gone Lt. Warren St. John after a few days here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Flinis St. John, Jr.
Among candidates for graduation at Snead College is Patsy Rebecca Bailey of Rt. 2, Cullman. She will receive an A.A. degree in secretarial studies.
Now stationed about 75 miles from each other in Germany are Pfc. Larry G. Hudson and Pfc. Tommy W. Hudson, grandsons of Mrs. Ida McGraw of 211 West Arnold St. They expect to be home in May of 1963.
LP-gas dealer Glenn Hulgan of Baileyton returned recently from Atlanta where he attended the 12th annual Southeastern Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association convention and trade show.
Former Cullman residents, the Milo R. Dickermans, celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on March 23rd at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, where Mr. Dickerman has been a patient for several weeks recuperating from injuries he received when he was hit by an automobile. The Dickermans have recently enjoyed a visit from their son, Robert, and his wife, who flew from Santa Monica, Calif. Their other child, Mrs. Bruce H. Wallace, lives in Fairhope, where Mr. Wallace is now a member of the Fairhope High School faculty.
Berlin Sunshine Club
The recent meeting of the Berlin Sunshine Club was held at the community center with nineteen members present. Hostesses for the meeting were Nell Payne and Elsie Teichmiller.
Committees were appointed to make plans for a candidate rally supper. A large sign for the front lawn of the community center was also discussed. After the business session, bingo was enjoyed by the group with Allie Bailey, Emma Payne and Edna White winning the prizes. Anne Johnson ad Lois Burks were appointed to plan an Easter program for April.
Those present included Bertha Boyles, Theolene Jones, Nova Grizzard, Faye Dismukes, Josie Duke, Billie Payne, Janette Witcher, Mary Patterson, Estelle Walker, Suzanne Walker, Magdalene Smith, Nell Bailey and those mentioned above.
