The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has upgraded the severe weather threat and almost the entire state is in an Enhanced Risk from late tonight into Monday.  This is mainly due to concerns for more widespread straight-line wind damage potential.

Scattered thunderstorms will develop across the state through this evening.  A couple of storms may contain wind gusts from 40-60 mph and hail, but widespread severe weather will not occur.

Then, a line of thunderstorms will move into northwestern Alabama after 12 am tonight and exit the southeastern portions by 4 pm.  Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail and a few embedded tornadoes within the line are all possible statewide.  Pockets of damaging wind gusts could occur anywhere within the state.

Total rainfall through Monday will be 1-3 inches with locally higher amounts in stronger storms.  This could result in some brief flooding issues, especially in urban areas.

Make sure you have at least two methods to receive severe weather warnings that can wake you up during the night, one of which is NOT an outdoor siren.  Also, keep in mind only the most extreme Severe Thunderstorm Warnings will NOT set off the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) on your cell phone.  Many are surprised to have substantial damage which did not trigger WEA.

That’s why it’s important to have a NOAA Weather Radio as another means of being alerted, especially in the middle of the night.
