
HOOVER, Ala. – The Fairview Aggies were on the road competing at this year’s Hoover Tournament this week and they collected a 5-3 win over Calera Thursday night. The Eagles led 3-2 at one point but the Aggies plated three unanswered runs to pull away with a 5-3 win.
Lincoln Wright led off the top of the first with a single and Connor Scott moved home over to second with a sacrifice bunt. A few pitches later, Camden Cullen sent a double into left field to plate Wright and make it a 1-0 game. Calera answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead into the second inning.
After a couple of scoreless innings, Fairview tied things up at 2 in the top of the fourth when Barrett York scored on a Konnor Dunkin sacrifice fly. Calera scored in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead 3-2 but the Aggies claimed the lead for good in the top of the fifth. A double from Scott and a single from Cullen put runners on the corners and Cullen scored on a fielder’s choice later in the inning to tie the game at 3. Three pitches later, a sacrifice fly from York drove in Colton Jennings and gave Fairview a 4-3 lead.
The Aggies tacked on another run in the sixth when Wright lined an RBI single into left field to make it a 5-3 game. Fairview collected the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 5-3 win over Calera.
Jaxon Robertson tossed a complete game on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three to earn the win. Wright (one RBI), Cullen (one RBI) and Nelson each posted two hits in the win.
West Point 9 – McAdory 6 (Baseball)
After falling behind 3-0, West Point plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-2 game and scored four more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. The momentum continued in the fifth when the Warriors put three more runs on the board to stretch the lead to 9-3. The Yellowjackets scored a pair of runs in the sixth to cut into the lead and pushed one more across in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to erase the deficit and West Point held on to a 9-6 win.
Cooper Howard (one hit) led the Warriors with three RBIs in the win. Hunter Graves (one RBI) and Charlie Ashley each posted a pair of hits. Titan Thornton earned the win on the mound after pitching 6.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and striking out four.
West Point 3 – Douglas 2 (Baseball)
After a scoreless first and second inning, the Warriors scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Douglas responded with a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1 and the Eagles tacked on another run in the fifth to move in front 2-1. West Point answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs on back to back singles to retake a 3-2 lead. The Warriors collected the final three outs in the top of the seventh to wrap up a 3-2 win over Douglas.
Charlie Ashley (one RBI), Cade Welborn (one RBI), Skylar Echols and Titan Thornton each recorded hits in the win.
Cullman 11 – Lincoln County 9 (Baseball)
The Bearcats jumped out to a fast start in this one, putting four runs on the board in the top of the first to take an early lead. Lincoln County cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, making it a 4-2 game but after a couple of scoreless innings, Cullman added to its lead in the fourth. The ‘Cats took advantage of four walks and three hits to plate five more runs and extend the lead to 9-2.
Cullman put two more runs on the board in the sixth to make it an 11-2 game, but the Bearcats had to fend off a big rally from Lincoln County. The Falcons scored seven runs in the final frame but couldn’t complete the comeback and the ‘Cats survived with an 11-9 win.
Tyler Brock led Cullman with three hits in the win and Knox Mauldin (one hit) racked up a game-high four RBIs.
Oak Mountain 12 – Cullman 1 (Baseball)
Oak Mountain jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The ‘Cats loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning but weren’t able to bring any runners in to score, leaving the lead at 6-0. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the second to make it an 8-0 game but after a scoreless third inning, Bennett Johnson lined an RBI single into center field to get Cullman on the board and cut the lead to 8-1. Unfortunately, that was the only run the Bearcats were able to score in this one and Oak Mountain pulled away to win it 12-1.
Johnson (one RBI) finished the game with a pair of hits and Cale Graves and Caleb Heis each added hits as well.
Vinemont 5 – Elkmont 1 (Baseball)
After a scoreless first inning, Elkmont took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but it was the only run Vinemont allowed in the game. The Eagles responded with three runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a 2-run off the bat of Kayden Henderson. Josh Rhodes led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to make it a 4-1 game and a Jake Hale RBI single stretched the lead to 5-1 going into the fifth. Neither offense was able to put any more runs on the board the rest of the way and the Eagles secured a 5-1 win at Toyota Field in Huntsville.
Hale (three hits) finished with a pair of RBIs in the win and Henderson (HR) added a pair of RBIs as well.
East Limestone 8 – Vinemont 2 (Baseball)
East Limestone jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and after a scoreless second inning, the Indians put three more runs on the board in the third to make it a 4-0 game going into the fourth. East Limestone scored another run in the fourth to stretch its lead to 5-0 but in the top of the sixth, a Kayden Henderson RBI single trimmed the lead to 5-1 and Rylan McRae scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2.
However, the Eagles couldn’t get any closer than that and the Indians pulled away to win it 8-2.
Henderson (one RBI), McRae, Hayden Robinson, Jake Hale, Owen McKinney and Josh Rhodes each recorded a hit in the loss.
