PREP BASEBALL: Bearcats earn 6-3 win over Spain Park; Wednesday scoring recap

HOOVER, Ala. – The Cullman Bearcats are spending their spring break at this year’s Hoover Tournament and they kicked things off with a win over Spain Park Wednesday night. The ‘Cats led 6-0 at one point and fended off a late push from the Jaguars to collect a 6-3 win.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Cullman was able to put some runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Case Edwards drove a lead off single up the middle and Brooks Heatherly was hit by the next pitch to give the Bearcats a pair of runners. Bennett Johnson lined a single to right field to load the bases and Tyler Brock knocked a bases-clearing double into center field to put Cullman in front 3-0 going into the fourth.

The ‘Cats added to their lead in the fifth. An RBI single from Cooper Loftin drove in Brock to make it a 4-0 game and later in the inning, Andrew Au lifted an RBI double into left field to score Loftin and make it 5-0 going into the sixth. Carson Stancil sent an RBI double into right field to plate Caleb Heis and stretched the lead to 6-0 with one inning remaining. Spain Park finally found some offense in the top of the seventh, pushing three runs across the plate to cut into the deficit but it wasn’t enough to overcome Cullman’s lead and the ‘Cats collected a 6-3 win over the Jaguars.

Brock finished the game with three hits and three RBIs. Loftin (one RBI) and Johnson each added a pair of hits as well. Fysher Dahlke went 6.1 innings on the mound, allowing three runs on just three hits and striking out eight batters.

Helena 13 – Fairview 5 (Baseball)

After a scoreless first inning, Helena hit hard in the top of the second, plating six runs to take a big lead early on. The Huskies added three more runs in the top of the third to make it a 9-0 game, but the Aggies answered in the bottom of the fourth. Barrett York lined an RBI single into right field to trim the lead to 9-1 and later in the inning, Konnor Dunkin drove an RBI single back up the middle to make it 9-2. Lincoln Wright knocked a single into center field to plate two more runs and bring the lead down to 9-4 going into the fifth.

After Helena tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth, Connor Scott scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 12-5 game. The Huskies scored one more run in the seventh to wrap up a 13-5 win over Fairview.

Wright (two RBIs), York (one RBI), Scott and Jackson Earnest each posted a pair of hits in the loss.

Springville 10 – Holly Pond 0 (Baseball)

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Springville plated seven runs in the second to move ahead of the Broncos 8-0 early in this one. The Tigers added another run in the third and one more in the fourth to defeat Holly Pond 10-0 in five innings.

Ardmore 9 – Holly Pond 6 (Baseball)

Holly Pond jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. An error allowed Sawyer Olinger to reach first base and he stole second, another error allowed him to advance to third. A few pitches later, Carson Ryan lined a single into right field plate Olinger and make it a 1-0 game. However, Ardmore answered with four runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second to take an 8-1 lead into the third.

With the bases loaded in the top of the third, Cole Eubanks was hit by a pitch, bringing Ryan home to score and trimming the lead to 8-2. Later in the inning, Jackson Miller punched an RBI single into right field to make it an 8-3 game. With a pair of runners on in the top of the fourth, an Ardmore error allowed two more Bronco runners to score, bringing the lead down to 8-5 going into the fifth.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Ardmore pushed one more run across in the sixth to move ahead 9-5. An RBI single from Ty Dunn cut the lead to three in the bottom of the seventh but Holly Pond couldn’t chip away any more than that and Ardmore held on to win it 9-6.

Ryan, Eubanks and Miller each finished with a hit and an RBI in the loss.

Hewitt-Trussville 8 – Good Hope 1 (Softball)

An RBI groundout and a two-out single helped Hewitt-Trussville jump out to an early 3-0 lead in their opening at-bats. Natalie Miller drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second inning for Good Hope. A groundball moved her over to second, and two pitches later, Brooklyn Lambert hit an RBI double to right field to cut it to 3-1. That would be the only run of the game for the Lady Raiders, as the Lady Huskies scored the final five runs of the contest, and they ended up defeating Good Hope 8-1.

Lambert finished with a hit and an RBI for the Lady Raiders, and Campbell Koch and Molly Benefield each added a hit of their own in the loss.

Morristown- Hamblen 9 – West Point 2 (Softball)

West Point struck first in its opening at-bats. Lauren Windham drew a four-pitch walk to start out the game. She stole second and a groundball moved her over to third. Brayley Phillips hit an RBI double to left field to give the Lady Warriors the early lead, but Morristown-Hamblen scored three runs in their half to take a 4-1 lead. The Lady Canes added two more runs in the second and one more in the third to make it 7-1. Macie Brown led off the top of the fourth inning with a single and later scored on an error to cut it to 7-2. Morristown-Hamblen put up two more runs in their half, and they would go on to knock off West Point 9-2.

Phillips finished with a hit and an RBI for the Lady Warriors. Katie Beth Yovino added a pair of hits, while Brown and Cabri Blackwood each collected a hit of their own in the loss.

West Point 11 – Lynn 1 (Softball)

Lynn’s RBI single to start out the game gave them a 1-0 lead, but West Point countered in the bottom of the first inning. Yovino hit a double to left field to lead off the inning, and Windham’s single up the middle brought home Yovino, as that tied the game up at one. The Lady Warriors broke the tie in the second. Kealie Harbison drew a leadoff walk and later stole second. Alissa Stephenson hit an RBI triple to right field to give West Point a 2-1 lead. Yovino bunted on the first pitch, and Stephenson came home to score to extend their lead to 3-1.

The Lady Warriors added to their lead in the third. Macie Brown hit a leadoff double, and after she stole third, Blackwood drove her in on an RBI triple to make it 4-1. Later that inning, Averee Folds bunted Blackwood home to put West Point ahead, 5-1, and Stephenson added an RBI single to give them a 6-1 lead. Windham led off the Lady Warrior fourth with a double. She would later come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Brown to make it 7-1.

Yovino hit a single to lead off the sixth for West Point. She stole second and came around to score on an RBI single by Windham to extend their lead to 8-1. Phillips followed that up with an RBI double to give them a 9-1 lead. One out later, Blackwood hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to put the finishing touches on an 11-1 win for the Lady Warriors.

Blackwood led the way for West Point with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Windham (three hits) and Stephenson (two hits) each added a pair of RBIs. Yovino finished four-for-four with an RBI, while Phillips (two hits), Brown (one hit), and Folds (one hit) all drove in a run in the win. Kortni Baker went the distance for the Lady Warriors, as she gave up just four hits and one unearned run and struck out three.
