Gene Selken Sutherlin, of Cullman, Alabama, passed away on March 6, 2025, at the age of 85. Mr. Sutherlin was born in Missouri, to Clarence Wilburn and Mary Louise Selken Sutherlin on May 6, 1939.

Gene was a kind and gentle man who was always willing to help others. His commitment and sacrifice for others was seen in his honorable service to our nation as he served two terms in the United States Army. He selflessly offered to reinstate when the Vietnam War began but he was not called to action. Although he did not serve during the war, he was willing to do so if needed.

Mr. Sutherlin enjoyed farming, both vegetables and flowers, and everything he planted thrived under his tender and knowledgeable care. Gene also enjoyed caring for his farm animals which often included goats, donkeys, geese, and chickens. He always had a dog as well. Gene enjoyed the outdoors and found joy working alongside the land and animals.

Mr. Sutherlin was a loving and devoted husband and father. His daughters recall being brought up in a loving and happy home where they knew they were cherished by their parents. Gene enjoyed being at home with his family and their time spent together will always hold a special place in the hearts of his children.

Mr. Sutherlin is preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Carolyn Jean Moser Sutherlin; son, Gene Sutherlin, Jr.; daughter, Sheryl Ann White (Greg); and brother, William Dean Sutherlin (Ruth).

Those left to cherish Gene’s memory includes his daughters, Alice Newby (Gary), Kimberly Thurmond (Darren); grandchildren, Chris Waldrip (Micaela), Lauren Symms (Chris), Abigail Waldrip; great-grandchildren, Harrison and Hallie; brother, Richard Sutherlin (Harriet); sister, Jane Kay Scoggins; and nieces and nephews, Julie Lawsen (Tod), Shelly Sutherlin, Caitlin Scoggins, Casey Scoggins, Bill Sutherlin (Karen), Chris Sutherlin (Meri), and Mary Beth Trochek (Alex).
