CULLMAN, Ala. – The third-grade classes at East Elementary School brought history to life during the school’s fourth annual “Living History Museum” recently. A celebration of Black History Month, the Living History Museum is an immersive and educational experience where the students perform reenactments and demonstrations focusing on the Harlem Renaissance and the contributions of African Americans to the arts.

The event is part of the school’s broader curriculum, which includes a unit titled “A Changing Nation,” which explores the nation’s diverse history. The students selected and researched important figures from history, then performed speeches that highlighted their impact on history, celebrating African American figures.

The Living History Museum offers numerous educational benefits. It enhances public speaking skills, encourages independent research and promotes creative thinking. The event also provides students a tangible connection to history, making it more relevant and engaging,” said Leeanna Smith, a third-grade teacher at East Elementary. “Additionally, the immersive experience engages their senses, leaving lasting memories and a deeper understanding of the subjects they study. The opportunity to teach others about their research also builds a sense of responsibility and pride in their learning.”
