Deacon Pete Nassetta and his wife Sondra are pictured with Fr. Patrick Egan, OSB, Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church during a recent retirement celebration of his past service to both Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Cullman and Saint Boniface Church in Hanceville. As Deacon, he served as the Hispanic liaison to the Hanceville church, and his congregational members provided special foods for the gathering of both congregations. In addition, Pete and Sondra were presented numerous gifts, one being a beautifully framed picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of Mexico, as well as a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Pete was ordained a deacon in 2013, following four-and-a-half years of rigorous preparation for his new position in the Catholic Church. In his comments to the attendees at the party, Pete made reference to the fact that his wife, Sondra, also made the journey through the studies toward the diaconate, by his side every step of the way and has continued to support his work throughout these past years. Currently there are seven deacons who serve both Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Cullman and Saint Boniface Church in Hanceville. Ken Kreps, a fellow parishioner, also was ordained in the same class of permanent deacons back in 2013.
Deacons in the Catholic Church serve as assistance to the pastors and ministers of the various congregations, supplying aid and assistance wherever and whenever needed.
Pete said he will continue to assist in whatever ways needed for both parishes and their members, although he will no longer be assigned to any liturgical duties.
He came to Cullman from New London, Connecticut, as a student at St. Bernard College back in 1970. He met his wife Sondra here, married and raised a family, sons David and Patrick. During his life, he worked for the public works of the City of Cullman, and also was responsible for the cofounding of the present day St Bernard Preparatory School back in 1983.
