HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville Public Library, recently renamed the Shirley Burden Public Library, offers a volunteer program and recently shared one of its volunteer success stories.
Branch Manager Teresa Rivera said the volunteer program is much needed, as they work with a very limited staff, all part time.
“Karys Hendersen reached out to us in the last quarter of last year,” Rivera said. “She is a high school honor society student and wanted to increase her volunteer exposure in the local community. It was perfect timing as we had lost an employee due to retirement, and we had not hired someone for a few months to replace. She helped me tremendously in reorganizing the entire library with the recoding of the Young Adult section transitioned to the Adult Fiction. The entire library had to be reorganized. She continues to assist a few hours weekly with other aspects of the library.”
Rivera said now they are revamping their children’s area which holds thousands of children’s books.
“As the new manager, I could not have completed these tasks without her kind assistance,” Rivera said. “She is gaining experience as well as learning how the library is run. … The guidance counselor has also provided us with names of other high school students willing to assist as needed. I interview and then decide where the best strengths can be utilized. This is a win-win for us and students who would like to gain experience for their resume.”
Next up for the library is the summer program which has six weeks of fun and exciting events planned for the children with the theme being “Color Your World.” This program starts May 28 with Larry the Magician.
“We are proud and honored to serve the community of Hanceville, and look forward to having fun in the library,” Rivera said. “On March 5, we have the Soil and Water Conservation District volunteering to read to the children aged 3-plus, the theme being ‘Reading across America Week.’ Please join us on Facebook for weekly detailed happenings.”
