CULLMAN, Ala. – At its monthly meeting on Feb. 18, the Cullman City School Board recognized multiple individuals and groups for their accomplishments.
Cynthia Parker, Cullman Middle School secretary of 19 years, was honored for her professionalism, kindness and efficiency. Seventh-grade math teacher Brett Hazelrigs was recognized for his commitment to student success. Cullman Middle School student Reagan Blackwood was celebrated for achieving the second highest GPA in her class and for involvement with multiple school organizations. East Elementary student Talyn McClendon was honored for winning the 2025 Cullman County Spelling Bee. He will compete in the Alabama State Spelling Bee on March 22 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The board reported that efforts are being made to expand the Cullman Band program by incorporating sixth and seventh graders into the beginning band program.
Cullman High School Theatre was recognized for its accomplishments. The program won “Best in Show” at the Walter Trumbauer Festival for its performance of “The Old Man and the Moon.”The board said the students have been invited to represent Alabama at the Southeastern Theatre Conference festival in March. In addition to this prestigious award, they also received awards for best lighting design, sound design and individual acting awards. The department also won “Best in Show” at the Alabama Thespian Festival, which paved the way for them to take part in the June International Thespian Festival in Bloomington, Indiana.
After recognitions, the board approved the December 2024 financial report, various personnel changes and action items. It reported that revenue is slightly ahead of projections, while expenditures remain on track.
The school system has multiple events on the horizon, with spring assessments scheduled for March 11, the ACT for 11th graders and testing for grades 2-8 in April. The Cullman City Schools Job Fair is set for March 20 at Cullman City Primary School.
A recent professional development day titled “Red, White and Rebooted” provided faculty with technology training, and, finally, resurfacing of the high school track is set to begin in early May and finish around mid-June.
The next Cullman City School Board meeting will take place March 18, at 5 p.m. at East Elementary.
