CULLMAN, Ala. – The City of Cullman this week announced the completion of its first-ever green parking lot, marking what it says is a significant step toward sustainable urban development. “This innovative low-impact development (LID) project showcases the City’s commitment to environmental stewardship and efficient land use,” the City said in a statement.
The new parking lot, located at the corner of Second Avenue Northeast and Young Street Northeast, features:
- 193 total parking spots, including eight ADA-compliant spaces
- 100% pervious surface, allowing for natural water infiltration
- Heavy-duty grid system capable of supporting loads over 5,000 lbs.
- 10 newly planted oak trees for enhanced aesthetics and shade
The parking lot’s design incorporates a heavy-duty grid system, backfilled with top soil and seeded to create a fully permeable surface.
“This innovative approach maximizes parking capacity while eliminating the need for traditional stormwater management systems, which often consume valuable real estate,” said Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs.
According to the City, the green parking lot offers numerous benefits, including:
- Reduced stormwater runoff and improved water quality
- Enhanced aesthetic appeal with integrated vegetation
- Efficient land use without compromising parking capacity
“By implementing this LID parking solution, Cullman joins the ranks of forward-thinking municipalities embracing sustainable stormwater management practices,” said the statement. “This project not only addresses immediate parking needs but also contributes to long-term environmental and community benefits.”
