PREP SOFTBALL: Vinemont wins 14-12 shootout at Addison

Vinemont 14 – Addison 12 (Softball)

There was no shortage of offense in this game between the Vinemont Lady Eagles and the Addison Lady Bulldogs. Vinemont took the lead in the fourth and had to hold off a late rally from Addison to win the game 14-12.

Addison jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first. They drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning, then Mattie Johnson hit a two-run single to give them a 2-0 lead. Johnson then scored to make it 3-0. Vinemont quickly loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second. Jadyn Knott drew a walk to cut it to 3-1, then Abby Kuykendall’s two-run single and an RBI single from Bryleigh Basinger gave them a 4-3 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs put runners on the corners with two outs in their half, and Johnson’s two-run single gave them the lead right back at 5-4. It would be until the top of the fourth that Vinemont would reclaim the lead and then some. The Lady Eagles quickly put runners on the corners to lead off the inning, then Kuykendall lined an RBI double to center field, Knott drove in a run on a ground ball, Haley Millwood added an RBI double, and Kylie Metzger hit a two-run single to give them a 9-5 lead.

Johnson scored on a dropped third strike, and Summer Evans lined an RBI single to right field to cut it to 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth. Vinemont added on to their lead in the top of the seventh. A double and a single put runners on second and third with one out, then Basinger hit an RBI single to make it 10-7. Tori Vines later added a two-run double, then Audriena Key’s two-run double to left field extended the Lady Eagle lead to 14-7. Addison didn’t go down without a fight in their final at-bats.

An error, a single, and a dropped third strike loaded up the bases with one out. Preslei Atkins lined a two-run single to center field to trim the deficit to 14-9. One out later, Evans scored on a wild pitch, then Lainey Evans added a two-run single to make it a 14-12 game. However, Vinemont was able to hold on to defeat the Lady Bulldogs 14-12.

Kuykendall (three hits) and Basinger (two hits) each finished with three RBIs for Vinemont. Vines, Key, and Metzger all added a hit and two RBIs, while Millwood and Knott both collected a pair of hits and an RBI. For Addison, Johnson led the way with three hits and four RBIs. Lainey Evans and Atkins each added a hit and two RBIs, while Summer Evans collected a hit and an RBI.

Vinemont 21 – East Lawrence 6 (Baseball)

Vinemont broke open a close game in the fourth inning and they went on cruise control from there, as they rolled to a double-digit win over East Lawrence in its season opener.

Vinemont didn’t waste any time getting out to a quick lead. Jake Hale hit a one-out double, then Rush Sandlin followed that up with one of his own to give them the early lead. Owen McKinney made it 2-0 on an RBI groundout. Hayden Robinson scored on an error in the top of the second to make it 3-0. A pair of RBI groundouts by McKinney and Rylan McRae gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead in the top of the third. A two-run single and a pair of RBI singles by East Lawrence in their half cut it to 5-4.

Vinemont broke the game wide open in the fourth, as they put up an 11 spot in the inning. The big hits came from McKinney (RBI single), Kayden Henderson (two-run single), and Hale (RBI double), as the Eagles quickly extended their lead to 16-4. East Lawrence made it a 16-6 game in their half, but Vinemont put up five more runs in the top of the fifth. Carson Drummond drew a bases-loaded walk, Henderson added a two-run single, and Hale hit a two-run triple to make it a 21-6 game. Drummond worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth and ended up getting the final two outs of the game to help seal the 21-6 win for Vinemont.

Henderson led the way for Vinemont with three hits and four RBIs. Hale (four hits) and McKinney (one hit) each finished with three RBIs. Drummond added a pair of RBIs, while Sandlin (two hits), McRae (two hits), Chad Reynolds, and Banks Borwick all collected an RBI in the game.

Muscle Shoals 12 – West Point 5 (Baseball)

West Point got out to an early lead, but Muscle Shoals took over after that, as a big sixth inning helped them get past the Warriors.

West Point got on the scoreboard first in its opening at-bats. Boston Freeman drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an RBI single by Titan Thornton to give them the early lead. Muscle Shoals tied the game up at one in the top of the second on an RBI double. The Warriors broke the tie in their half. They loaded up the bases with two outs, then Freeman drew a walk to give them a 2-1 lead. Cooper Howard and Thornton each got hit by the pitch to make it 4-1.

The Trojans cut it to 4-2 in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout, then they put up six runs in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead. Muscle Shoals added three more runs in the sixth to stretch their lead to 11-4. Charlie Ashley scored on a wild pitch in the Warrior half of the sixth to trim the deficit to 11-5, but the Trojans put up another run in the seventh to make it 12-5. West Point wouldn’t get any closer after that though as they ended up falling to Muscle Shoals 12-5.

Thornton finished with a hit and two RBIs for West Point, while Freeman (one hit) and Howard each added an RBI.
