CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman High School student musicians Lily Howze and Max Townson achieved Alabama All State Jazz Band honors.

The Alabama Bandmasters Association hosted its annual All-State Jazz Band Festival Jan. 23-25, bringing together the most talented high school and middle school jazz musicians from across the state. Students across Alabama are encouraged to audition for a spot in one of the elite ensembles: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Middle School. Each group consists of musicians who are selected based on audition scores. The audition process is rigorous and highly selective, making securing a spot extremely challenging.

Howze ranked sixth statewide, earning her the position of lead auxiliary percussion player in the Bronze Band. She was moved up to lead drum set when another student musician dropped out. Townson ranked fourth on guitar, making him the alternate for the Bronze Band.

“These students put a lot of work into refining their skills and we are very proud of them,” said Cullman High School and Middle School Assistant Band Director Doug Teuscher. “These seniors are some of the top musicians in the state and their talent and dedication to their craft have paid off, placing them among the brightest and most inspiring student musicians.”

The All-State Jazz Band Festival also features renowned clinicians who spend those three days working closely with the students. Students who were selected to be a part of these bands traveled to Birmingham, for the event, which concluded with concerts at the BJCC Theatre.
