Obituary: Cecil Thomas Spears

Cecil Thomas (Tommy) Spears, 87, of Hanceville, AL, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper, AL. He was born on October 31st, 1937. Tommy was a devoted servant of God, loving husband, cherished father, and treasured friend. His life was a testament to faith, service, and love. 

For many years, Tommy faithfully served as a deacon at Hopewell Baptist Church, where he found joy in sharing his faith and ministering to others. His commitment to God and his church family left a lasting impact on all who knew him. Tommy also dedicated 38 years to the Birmingham Police Department, where he served with honor and distinction. His colleagues remember him as a compassionate, steadfast officer whose selflessness inspired those around him. 

Above all, Tommy was a loving husband and father who found great pride and joy in his family. His warm smile, kind heart, and steadfast faith left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Though his absence leaves a void, his legacy of faith, love, and service lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. 

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, the late Cecil and Clemmie Taft Spears. 

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Rose Slovensky Spears; sons, Randy (Linda) Spears and Stephen (Andrea) Spears; grandchildren, Maggie (Adam) Pitts, Sara Beth Spears, Sydney Spears (Andrew) Thomas and Emily Spears; great grandchildren, Davis, Parker and Sydney Pitts; brother, Ronnie (Diane) Spears; sister, Linda (Gene) Gravlee; and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins. 

Honorary pallbearers will be the City of Birmingham Police Officers.  

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29 at the Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will precede the service with family visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by friend visitation from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a burial service immediately following the service at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, AL. Rev. Truman Davis will be officiating the services.
