ADDISON, Ala. — The Winston County Tournament championship games were hosted at Addison High School today and the Bulldogs came away with a split. Winston County’s Lady Jackets pulled away in the second half for a 47-33 victory over the Lady Bulldogs but in the boys’ game, it was Addison that was able to pull away in the second half to defeat the Yellow Jackets 71-49.
Winston County 47 – Addison 33 (Varsity Girls)
The ladies from Addison were hoping to pull their second consecutive upset in the tourney final but it was not to be. The first period opened up with both teams playing pretty well. The score was tied at 13 with just seconds left when the Lady Jackets bombed in about a 30-foot 3 pointer at the buzzer, to give the Lady Jackets a 16-13 lead at the end of the first. Addison was led by Gracie Roberts as she hit 3 treys for her 9 points. Ava Bartlett had 4 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs in the period. Winston County was led by Linley Cobb with 7 points. Lady Jacket Ellie Veal had 5 points as well.
The second period got a little chippy between the teams as a couple of technicals were called on both. Two fans even got kicked out of the gym during the game. There was very little scoring going on but WCHS managed to outscore Addison in the second period foul fest 8-7. Winston County led 24-20 at the half. Bartlett led Addison with 4 points while Emma Cleghorn had 4 boards. Cobb led the Lady Jackets with 6 points and 5 rebounds.
The start of the second half was the start of the Lady Bulldogs demise. For some reason Addison has trouble coming out of the locker room. Addison made mistake after mistake and WCHS capitalized on them. WCHS outscored the Addison 14-5 to stretch the lead to 38-25. Lady Jacket Marleigh Stewart led the team with 5 points while four other Jackets scored as well. Cobb and Stewart each had 3 boards in the period. Lauryn Cunningham had a three-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs while Bartlett pulled down 4 more rebounds.
WCHS slowed it down in the fourth and won the period 9-8 to take the 47-33 victory. Roberts and Cunningham each nailed a three-pointer to lead Addison while Karson Wyatt had 2 rebounds. WCHS was led by Jaylee Calloway with 4 points.
WCHS took the county title for the second consecutive year in a row. Addison will host Oakman for senior night on Monday, Jan. 27.

Addison 71 – Winston County 49 (Varsity Boys)
Addison was looking for their third victory of the season over Winston County, but they were going to have to play better than they did on Friday to accomplish that. Well, Coach Triston Chambers had them ready and they were able to overcome a game Yellow Jacket squad for the title.
The first period was a back-and-forth affair as both teams came out ready to play. WCHS scored the first two buckets of the game and they held on to win the period 16-15. The Jackets were led by Garrett Lewis and Aiden Fox who each scored 5 points. Max Moore led the team with 3 rebounds. Addison was led by Elijah Roberts who had a heck of a period as he carried Addison with 6 points, 4 boards and 4 steals.
Addison began to step up the defensive intensity and good things began to happen. The Bulldogs won the period 20-13 to take a less than comfortable 35-29 lead in at the half. The Bulldogs just couldn’t shake Yellow Jackets. Brad Willette had 7 points to lead Addison, while Kaden Dyson and Joey Wilson each chipped in 5. Winston County was led by Fox with 4 points and 3 rebounds.
The third period started with Addison scoring 15 of the first 23 points to take a 50-37 lead with 2 minutes to go in the third. The third period ended with Addison leading 51-39. Addison was led by Jed Wilkins who had 4 points and 5 rebounds. WCHS was led Rakim Moore and Max Moore with 3 points apiece. Fox grabbed 3 boards to lead the Jackets.
During the fourth quarter Addison was able to stretch the led to 17 with 6 minutes to go in the game at 56-39. Winston County was then able to go on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to ten at 56-46. The Bulldogs then clamped down on defense and outscored the Jackets 15-3 to come away with the 71-49 victory.
