HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville branch of the Cullman County Public Library System (CCPLS) has been renamed in honor of longtime librarian Shirley Burden. Hanceville Mayor Jimmy Sawyer announced the facility will now be called the Shirley Burden Public Library.
An sign with the updated name will be erected soon.
Additionally, CCPLS Director Amber Thorton facilitated the addition of a new book drop at the Hanceville library. The book drop, valued at over $5,000, was donated and has been dedicated to honor Burden’s many years of service. Library patrons may now return their books inside during operating hours or through the book drop when the library is closed.
The library is introducing numerous new activities to help better engage with the community. Plans to host local authors, book signings and adult bingo once a month on Tuesdays starting at 1 p.m. are currently in the works. Library staff are also developing activities for children and teenagers. In February, the library is planning on hosting art and game clubs during storytime as well as a Valentine’s Day party for children.
Recently appointed Library Manager Teresa Rivera invited residents to reach out with any questions or ideas they may have.
“We look forward to continuing to serve the community of Hanceville and have fun while doing it,” she said.
Library staff also extended gratitude to local volunteers who assisted in the reorganizing of the library and children’s sections, saying the hard work was deeply appreciated.
