HANCEVILLE, Ala. – We wrapped up Thursday night’s county tournament action with another varsity girls’ semifinal matchup between (2) Vinemont and (3) West Point. The Lady Warriors went into the locker room with a 5-point lead at halftime and outscored Vinemont 29-19 in the second half to pull away with a 63-48 win and advance to the county finals.
After a couple early baskets from Reagan Robinson, Carley Stephens and Caroline Miller each drained a three to give Vinemont an early, 10-2 lead. However, West Point was able to battle back, trimming the lead to 10-9 with four points from Laklin Shadix and a three-pointer from Camryn Faulkner. Camryn’s next three made it a 14-12 game later in the period and after Shadix hit two more free throws, Jaelyn Faulkner laid one in to tie the game at 16. Camryn Faulkner scored on the next possession to give West Point an 18-16 lead. Arleigh Thomason split a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the first to cut the lead to 18-17 at the start of the second.
A pair of scores from Laklin Shadix put the Lady Warriors in front 22-20 early in the second quarter. Vinemont was able to tie it up at 26 later in the period but Shadix split a pair of free throws to put West Point back up by 1 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. Shadix hit two more free throws to give the Lady Warriors a 3-point lead, but Robinson knocked down a three on the other end to keep the score knotted at 29. West Point finished the first half strong, taking a 34-29 lead into the locker room at halftime after Caitlee Simmons buried a three in the final seconds of the period.
Camryn Faulkner scored a pair of baskets and Shadix laid one in to put the Lady Warriors ahead 40-31 early in the third. Miller drilled a pair of three-pointers as the quarter went on to trim the lead to 46-39 and Morgan Flanagan sank a couple of free throws in the final 30 seconds of the third to make it a 46-41 game at the start of the fourth.
Jaelyn Faulkner laid one in and Shadix scored inside to give West Point a 9-point lead early in the fourth. Jaelyn’s next basket made it a 52-41 game with five minutes to play and baskets by Shadix and Kealie Harbison stretched the lead to 56-41. Jaelyn Faulkner scored inside, drew the foul and added the free throw to make it 59-44 later in the fourth quarter and another basket by Harbison gave the Lady Warriors a 15-point lead with just over two minutes to play. Vinemont was unable to overcome the second half lead and West Point punched its ticket to the county finals with a 63-48 win over the Eagles
Shadix led the Lady Warriors with 23 points in the win. Jaelyn Faulkner posted 15 and Camryn Faulkner finished with 14. Robinson led the way for Vinemont with 15 points in the loss and Miller finished just behind her with 14.
West Point will take on (1) Good Hope in the varsity girls’ championship game Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
