Obituary: Hazel Emaline Richter

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hazel Emaline Brock Richter, age 95. She passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, surrounded by her family. Hazel was born on July 27, 1929, in Cullman, Alabama, to the late Rotha Jackson and Essie Arlissa Brock. She was affectionately known to everyone as “Granny” and was loved by all who knew her. 

She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Jacob Hubert Richter Sr., and children Michael Joe and David Leldon Richter, grandchildren Jason and Mark Edward Richter and great grandchild Porter Ross Heatherly, brothers: Winfred “Wad” Brock, Rotha “Bus” Brock, Roland “Poag” Brock and Leland “Dink” Brock, and sister Rachel Lousie Brock Culpepper. 

She is survived by sons Jacob H “Ricky” Richter Jr., Daniel “Booty” Richter (Lisa), brother Douglas “Joe” Brock, grandchildren Mechelle Richter Lynskey and Melinda Richter, Jennifer Richter, Andrew Richter, Alex Richter (Casey), Andria Sims, Sara Heatherly (Michael) and Jacob Richter (Hannah) and great-grandchildren Brock Murphy, Jacey Alvis, Cayden and Cailey Cammack, Emmaline Richter, Hagan David Richter, Greyson James Heatherly, Ada Catherine, Frank Louis, Hazel Anastasia and Arthur Philip Richter. 

Hazel was a beloved member of her community. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Evangelical Protestant Church and the Women’s Guild. Hazel was an avid reader, great cook and a vivid storyteller. Her legacy lives on through the Richter Chapel, built in 1989, with a promise to never be locked so that anyone who needed to come would be able to enter at any time. 

A graveside service to celebrate Hazel’s life will be held on January 24, 2025, 11 a.m. at Cullman City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the City of Cullman’s Fund for the Richter Chapel. Donations will go directly to the upkeep and maintenance of her beloved Chapel.
